You're forgetting one thing: Derwin James's injuries. Can he stay healthy for 3 years on a $75.6M contract?

$75M for Derwin James? Chargers paying elite money to a guy who’s always hurt and misses half the season. Clown contract. This is gonna age like milk.

The undisputed heartbeat of the Chargers defense is locked in. Coming off another All-Pro season, he earned every single dime of that $57.5M guarantee. Safeties are officially getting paid! 💸

Paying a “safety” $25M a year feels like the most American thing ever. Now let’s see if the Chargers can protect leads too.

Derwin James is widely regarded by teammates, coaches, and the community as a genuinely humble, unselfish, and positive guy off the field. While he is a ferocious and highly physical player during games, he has a reputation for his leadership and deep community involvement

The Chargers lock up the “heart and soul of the defense” through the 2029 season. James had 94 tackles, 3 INTs, 7 PBUs in 2025.
