Churchgate - Virar - 83 kms - 1 hour 30 mins CST - Kalyan - 60 kms - 57 mins CST - Panvel - 47 kms - 1 hour 33 mins The airport and panvel terminus are getting ready in the next few years, for them to be successful the harbour line capacity needs to be augmented in a huge way.
Major failures daily in the harbour line with no plan for any capacity addition or alternative mass transit. With the airport incoming and loads of mass housing projects, it is an urgent need to plan a fast line and other metro connectivity between NM and rest of MMR.

Idk why but have seen this past 15 years at work, truck times from south Gujarat to Delhi/hosur/pune/JNPT have not reduced, in fact has gotten worse especially during summers. This is after GST/fasttag, new dmex, WDFC. WDFC is slower than road to send freight up north.
India is building US-style expressways to move freight faster. But many truckers still prefer older roads, where food, repairs and rest stops are cheaper. Aryan Gupta explains what’s putting the country’s $130 billion bet at risk: bloom.bg/4Bn5lr4

How has modi sarkar shat the bed on this important project? Didn't they sign the deals for rolling stock and signalling at the same time as laying the rails? incompetence leading to Japan having big leverage. Now we are scrambling to make home grown HSR indianexpress.com/article/bu…

Manali will look like this every long weekend until Himachal limits how many cars can drive into a town. Gandhi Jayanti fell on a Friday, so most of North India got three days off together. Shimla, Mussoorie, Nainital and Manali all choked on the same day. In Shimla, cars parked along the roads made it worse, and even five lanes at the Parwanoo toll plaza couldn't cope. It is not an infrastructure problem. Every famous place in the world has faced this. Zermatt in Switzerland has banned tourist cars for decades. You park in Täsch, about 5 km away, and take a 12-minute shuttle train in. In Zion National Park in the US, private cars can't use the main canyon road for most of the year. Everyone rides a free shuttle. Canada closed the road to Moraine Lake in Banff to private cars in 2023. You take a Parks Canada shuttle or a licensed bus. Japan capped the main Mount Fuji trail at 4,000 climbers a day in 2024 and added a fee. Venice started charging day-trippers an entry fee in 2024 on its busiest days. France splits the country into three zones and staggers school holidays, so the whole country doesn't hit the road in the same week. India also does this in a few places. Ooty and Kodaikanal use an e-pass with a daily cap, 8,000 vehicles for the Nilgiris on weekends, and train and government bus passengers don't need one. Manali itself has done it for Rohtang for years. Before the cap, around 5,000 vehicles went up every day. Now it's 1,200 with an online permit. So the system exists. It just stops at Rohtang. Here's how Himachal should roll it out. Step one, before Diwali. Put up live "Manali full" alerts on Google Maps and at the state border, and tow every car parked on the road. Step two, by the winter season. Make an online pass compulsory for outside cars on long weekends, linked to a hotel booking. No booking, no car entry. Exempt HRTC buses and local vehicles. Step three, within a year. Build a large parking lot near Patlikuhl and run electric shuttles into Manali every 10 minutes. Raise the green tax on long weekends and use it to pay for the shuttles. And there you have it. You fix the problem that has taken years and years to fix. In short, too many cars are trying to fit into a small hill town on the same three days. Himachal just needs to apply the same rules the world has been applying to Manali town before the next long weekend.
#WATCH | Manali, Himachal Pradesh: A huge crowd of tourists has flocked to Manali due to the long weekend. Traffic congestion is also being witnessed in the area. (02.10)

EXCLUSIVE: Hope for Versova-Ghatkopar Metro Blue Line 1 commuters. Finally, a number. Mumbai's oldest Metro to get 22 additional coaches for conversion of its 4-car trains to 6 car ones, subject to ongoing financial restructuring & fund availability. An accelerated delivery schedule has been targeted but timely financial support is crucial. Read details:

The real issue is transportation planning. When the #NaviMumbai International Airport was being planned and constructed, connectivity infrastructure should have been developed simultaneously. Metro 8 for the Western suburbs, Metro 12 and Metro 14 for the Eastern MMR, and Navi Mumbai Metro Line 2 from Taloja towards the NM airport should have been ready alongside the airport. But most of these connections are still on paper, with several projects unlikely to provide meaningful connectivity until much later. So, for a large part of the MMR, the only practical option remains a cab, which means higher travel costs and unpredictable journey times because several road projects are also incomplete. At present, apart from Navi Mumbai residents and to some extent South Mumbai residents using Atal Setu, there is no truly convenient way to reach the airport early and reliably. For people from #Thane and #Kalyan, #CSMIA can still feel like the more convenient option because the overall cab travel time is often comparable. There is also the advantage of direct local trains up to Kurla, followed by an auto or cab to CSMIA. For Navi Mumbai Airport, however, the rail journey from Thane involves multiple changes—first at Thane and then again at #Belapur/#Nerul to take the limited services towards Uran and Bamandongri. There is still no direct local-train connectivity from the major MMR suburbs to the airport. Road connectivity is also incomplete. The Airoli–Katai Naka project has yet to provide the required end-to-end connectivity, while the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway currently has a gap beyond the Badlapur tunnel. Further connectivity towards Panvel/Kalamboli is also dependent on pending land acquisition and construction packages. In short, the airport may be ready, but the transportation network around it is not. An international airport needs more than an airport terminal—it needs direct metro routes, frequent suburban rail connectivity and continuous road corridors connecting the entire MMR. Without these, Navi Mumbai Airport risks being well connected on paper but difficult to reach in practice for a large part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. @cbdhage @marinebharat @Ajitkum85387448 @AmeyKulkarni_21 @VedantMhatre1

If you look at it with 2011 numbers it shows. Now it will be even more so, and not just population, flight taking population will be concentrated closer to CSIA compared to NMIA. If you want airlines and people to shift easily, there will need to be some financial incentive.

Tbf it's a valid point. Majority of population lives in western suburbs, forcing them to nmia with higher fares and massive taxi costs is going to be met with resistance. There is no rail or bus connectivity

This is 2006 Survey Data from MMRDA CTS. I feel some change must have happened since then, but hard to believe Western Suburbs have moved from their top spot.

Reiterating, it's a stupid idea to forcibly shut down t1 and move flights to NMIA. Focus on cargo, rest of MMR and Maharashtra.

It's possible but I still see majority flying popn living closer to CSIA. Shutting down t1 is not the carrot that will push NMIA to flourish Along with NM, Adani needs to get deeper data that focuses on routes where rest of Mah, outside MMR travels as they will def prefer NMIA

Hits the nail on the head. A lot of andhbhakts here will blame the public instead of the govt. In no transit scenario in the world will 7x price increase be absorbed without protests. People don't earn enough to absorb that.
Replying to @VedantMhatre1
But they wasted 10 years trying to push through something that was dead on arrival. Getting the public to accept 7x fares. And now they will make the switch to AC trains at existing ticket prices anyway. Then why the fuck did you waste 10 years?!

The problem with the Coastal Road is that even if it achives its projected ridership of 68,000 PCUs per day for 20 years, it means an investment of Rs 262/trip. The Metro 3 in comparison, if it runs at projected capacity of 17 lakh pass/day for 20 yrs, will cost the public Rs 30 per trip. If instead, the city purchased 2000 buses and built bus lanes at say 5,000 cr, it would cost Rs 4 per trip. In short, the problem with the Coastal Road is that it is wasteful if it does well, and it is wasteful if it doesnt.
Mumbai’s Coastal Road is a project I’ve tracked from the day reclamation began. Watching nearly 10 million tonnes of rock, quarried in Navi Mumbai, being dumped into the sea to create 111 hectares—about 274 acres—of new land between Marine Drive, Breach Candy, Mahalaxmi and Worli Sea Face was quite something. Last month marked a year since the road began 24x7 operations. Traffic has since jumped nearly 81%—from an average of about 34,500 vehicles a day before August 15, 2025, to 62,640 after 24x7 operations began. But there’s an interesting gap here. The Coastal Road is drawing a lot more vehicles, but the traffic redistribution envisaged by planners is yet to materialise. The projection was around 68,000 cars in one direction alone, with traffic expected to shift from the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and the Pedder Road-Hughes Road corridor. Get him to fix Diva level crossing issue that is delaying and detaining all trains local and national entering and leaaving Mumbai. He is a local MP there. The detention and delay is killing commuters everyday. He is answerable there. If he has to pursue studies and more studies, he should quit public life.

MMRDA not completing road either atleast for Central and eastern MMR region.. See DME Spur of Virar JNPT section.. Virar to Badlapur package may get ready by Dec 2026... But package 18 Morbe to JNPT, NHAI merged into Alibaug Virar multi corridor and till date no land acquisition has happened.. So DME is like dead end after Badlapur tunnel.. And hopes till 2030.. Similarly Airoli to Katai freeway was supposed to be completed by 2024.. Now by Dec 2026 only Airoli to Mumbra may be functional.. But phase 3 Mumbra to Katai still stuck in land acquisition. So Shilphata traffic will further get worsen. And that completion also no hope till 2029... So forget metro even road project doesn't gets completely.. MMRDA or Metro both works only for western suburbs of Mumbai. Rich people gets facility all.. MMRDA body should be dissolved as it doesn't has any interest serving public beyond Mumbai municipal limits.. You need TMRDA if want project on fast track for Thane district region..

If there's any authority that's worse in planning metros than mmrda it's cidco. Both are very good in making roads. Should stick to that.

MMRDA’s obsession with ring roads is ruining Mumbai’s transit. Line 14 is endlessly delayed while they pour everything into roads. Strip MMRDA of transit duties and create a single dedicated agency to run all Metro and suburban rail across MMR.
6 years ago, I along with @navimumbaicv ran a massive online campaign to push for a metro between Kalyan-Ghansoli-Kanjurmarg. We got around 1000 people to personally email 20 people including MMRDA & Several Secretaries to CM of different department. Incl UD, Transport dept. MPs

Everyday this is the scenario between kalyan and thane, but the govt is busy building pod taxis and freeways and coastal roads.
How crowded is TOO crowded? A woman fell from an overcrowded Mumbai local between Diva and Mumbra this morning. The train had reportedly halted for a signal when she fell onto the tracks and suffered minor injuries. Mumbai’s lifeline is carrying millions. But is it carrying more than it safely can? #Mumbai #MumbaiLocal
