This morning, our coalition & dozens of other groups packed the steps of City Hall to call for COPA! 💪🏾💪🏽💪🏼
As we said in testimony before the Council, we need COPA now to expand the supply of permanently affordable, community controlled homes. @SpeakerMenin - let’s call a vote!

Congrats to @SouthBronxUnite for the creation of the HEARTs center CLT! Great use of public land for community benefit. nextcity.org/urbanist-news/a…
"It’s time to take Parkash out of the building and give tenants an opportunity to purchase it with the support from the bank, the city and organizations. We tenants do not want our rents to go to another abusive landlord’s pockets." @ChhayaCDC #PassCOPA

COPA is back—and NYC has a chance to right one of the former mayor's wrongs. We thank @CMSandyNurse for re-introducing the Community Opportunity to Purchase Act, which will help our city preserve affordable housing, support community ownership, and push back against displacement.

For years, New Yorkers have been priced out of their own neighborhoods as outside investors have profited.
With @CMSandyNurse's COPA legislation, when many apartment buildings go up for sale, tenants and nonprofits would have a chance to buy the building before investors.
I'm proud to support COPA, grateful for Councilmember Nurse's partnership, and looking forward working with City Council to pass this important bill.
I’ve been working with @NYCMayor since he was campaigning to create the Office of Deed Theft Prevention, and now, it’s a reality. @NYCMayor and I will continue to use every lever of power within City Hall to keep New Yorkers in their homes, and finally bring an end to Black displacement.
For far too long, City government has stood idly by while New York homeowners fall victim to criminal deed theft schemes.
Those days are over. We're creating the City's first Office of Deed Theft Prevention.
If you think you or someone you know may be a victim of deed theft, visit nyc.gov/deedfraud for support now.
Ms. Sabio is hopeful that if the campaign is successful, it could serve as an example of how other groups could use community land trusts to keep buildings from getting scooped up by developers. @ShannaSabio @GrowHouseNYC nytimes.com/2026/05/02/reale…
The @CooperSqCLT is hiring a CLT Manager!
The role will support the CLT’s mission of stabilizing housing and preventing speculation in the East Village, while coordinating efforts to expand land protection and engage the community. Learn more at nyccli.org/wp-content/upload…
“This legislation is meant to create a small window of opportunity for our trusted, mission-driven affordable housing providers to take these properties, purchase them...and provide safe, affordable housing that New Yorkers can live in.” @CMSandyNurse amny.com/real-estate/mamdani…

Historical memory in NYC is too short.
This isn't a new approach. It's exactly how the de Blasio admin did sweeps.
Nothing to do with helping people into housing - it didn't then and it won't now.

New: Mamdani is restarting homeless encampment sweeps. This comes after more than 20 people died in the cold. But the Mamdani admin's sweeps will focus on outreach, putting Homeless Services in the lead instead of the police department. w/ @JeffCMays nytimes.com/2026/02/18/nyreg…
SHAME! “Homeless encampment sweeps are ineffective, they are costly and they don’t actually solve the problem of homeless.”- @VOCALNewYork

NYC Council, now is the time to override the veto and enact COPA!
NEW: A tenant leader in a building that “Worst Landlord” Ohebshalom ran into the ground & a community land trust organizer explain in @CityLimitsNews how COPA would give tenants a critical tool to break the predatory cycle of speculation & displacement.

The @NYCCouncil is set to vote on COPA. COPA will allow orgs first dibs in purchasing buildings with 4-plus units and with major violations. @Chrislejohnyc @NewEconomyNYC @CMMercedesCD46 @RitaJosephNYC @SandyforCouncil @leahfrombklyn @DarleneMealy55

Five years after it was introduced, the City Council passed a revised version of the Community Opportunity to Purchase Act, or COPA, which supporters say will give mission-driven groups a leg up when affordable and distressed buildings come up for sale. citylimits.org/nyc-passes-bi…

Today the @NYCCouncil passed COPA to add another preservation tool to our toolbox!
By giving qualified purchasers a first chance to bid on distressed properties in city enforcement programs, COPA will help level the playing field & stop the cycle of speculation & rising rents.

If we want to make housing more affordable, the @nyccouncil must pass the Community Opportunity to Purchase Act

Older New Yorkers built this city and should not be priced out of their neighborhoods.
