It was great to attend the 2026 State of the City University of New York Address at John Jay College! Thank you to Chancellor of CUNY Félix V. Matos Rodríguez for sharing his vision for the future of our city’s public university system.

City University of New York is one of NYC’s greatest engines of opportunity, providing an affordable, high-quality education to students from every background and opening doors for generations of New Yorkers.

As a State Senator, I’m committed to ensuring CUNY has the resources it needs to thrive and that higher education remains accessible and affordable for all.

🌳 Street Tree Care Event When I served on the City Council, I met my goal of planting 1,000 new street trees across District 3 and introduced NYC’s first Urban Forest Master Plan.

I also launched the Green the In-Between Fund to bring even more trees to neighborhoods that need them most. Street trees clean our air, cool our streets, reduce flooding, support native wildlife, and improve public health.

When people think about biodiversity, Manhattan probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind. But cities have a critical role to play in addressing the global biodiversity crisis.

Now, as a State Senator, I’m working to build on that progress and advance policies that protect pollinator habitats, expand urban green space, restore native ecosystems, and promote sustainable development.

Protecting biodiversity isn’t just about preserving distant rainforests and wilderness areas. It’s also about transforming the places where billions of people already live. Cities are not separate from nature. They are part of it, and they must be part of the solution.

and survivors who made this victory possible. We cannot bring Francesco back, but his legacy will live on through the lives this law will save. 💙Watch a portion of my remarks from last night.

In my remarks last night, I shared why this legislation is so deeply personal to me. When I heard the story of Francesco, a 17-year-old who died by suicide after gaining access to an unsecured shotgun, I saw so much of myself in him.

Like Francesco, I struggled with my identity and mental health as a teenager. The difference is that my parents did not have a gun in our home. If they had, I truly do not believe I would be here today. A locked gun can mean the difference between a life lost and a life saved.
