This is a great 📖 for building capacity in 🏫 for evidence-aligned literacy instruction! It is written by Chris Such @Suchmo83, a U.K.-based education consultant with decades of real world experience. 💚 The ?s at the end of each chapter are perfect for a summer book study! 💁🏻‍♀️
Spring has sprung and it’s time to re-read a few of my favourite books on the #ScienceOfReading! Re-Read Recommendation #13: Primary Reading Simplified, by @Suchmo83 I was honoured to be invited to preview this book before its release and to write a book review which can be found here: learningandthebrain.com/blog… Here are my three key takeaways from this phenomenal book: 📘Effective reading lessons require 3 core elements: regular decoding and fluency practice; discussions about the text; practice writing about the text and exposure to different genres of texts! 📘Comprehension is not a standalone skill that can be taught in isolation (ex. No more strategy of the week!!) 📘Model and practice reading fluency with evidence based approaches such as partner reading and choral reading, and explicitly teach new vocabulary! #PrimaryReadingSimplified

👂 You heard that right... for reading fluency, AVERAGE is GOOD! Students who read above average on ORF are likely reading TOO FAST to make sense of what they are reading. Check out this article by @janhasbrouck to learn more: ow.ly/W52A50Tls2h

Do you know why the /n/ is sometimes spelled kn, as in the words knee, know, and knight, etc? The more we know about the layers of our language, the better we can support our students in reading and writing. The answers can be found in the origin of the words(etymology) and the differentiation of meanings(semantics). Read this quick article if you are interested in understanding how etymology impacts spelling. Students don't need to memorize this, but sharing with them the story of how the spelling of some words came to be can support students' understanding that English words are not haphazard.

Students do not magically learn to read with more time. Truth is, failure to teach foundational reading skills using a structured literacy approach means that more and more middle school and high school students can’t read independently. As both a teacher AND parent of daughters in grades 7 and 9, this resonates with me deeply. However, it’s never too late to teach a child to read. In fact, all students, regardless of their age, have the #RightToRead. Check out this @IESResearch document for evidence-based strategies to help older, emergent readers: ies.ed.gov/ncee/WWC/Docs/Pra…

“I would make sure the literacy pieces are what is being covered in that time [literacy block]. Explicitly teaching grapheme-phoneme correspondences and phonics. That is so critical to learning.” - @SoniaCabell
We were lucky to be a part of the @LiteracyIRL Conference in Dublin this weekend with keynote speaker @SoniaCabell.🍀 We appreciated this important presentation: How Integrated Content and Literacy Instruction Improves Language Comprehension Sonia Q. 1 of 8 So this year I am working with a fourth-grade boy who at the start of his work with me did not know the names and sounds of most letters in the alphabet. He was non- reader with virtually no sight words.
