Excited to share this from my lab. Aging brains are an untapped resource for the AI community: biology has been stress-testing neural circuits since time began. What breaks, what holds & why? The answers could reshape how we build robust AI. 🧠
The #AI field is obsessed with making neural networks more efficient and robust. Biology ran this experiment over millions of years & we call it aging. A new perspective paper argues that aging brains, far from being just a story of decline, are a powerful testbed for theories of neural computation. How does a decision-making circuit stay flexible when its biological substrate is changing? Answering that question matters for longevity science, AI robustness, & understanding what makes brains so different from the networks we build. The tools are finally ready. 🧠 sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Very proud of another phenomenal @UCLA_BRI Pride Month🏳️‍🌈Lecture. Huge thanks to Dr. Martha Streng (@geewhiz_ephys) for an inspiring and thought-provoking talk. We all left wondering how the cerebellum might be influencing our favorite brain region. @BrainOfZedZed @doctorpoe

Excited to share our new paper with @NeuroMikeRyan and colleagues. We argue that aging brains offer a powerful testbed for computational neuroscience & that modern theoretical tools could help us move from describing cognitive decline to promoting resilience. #healthspan
Most of what we know about how the brain makes decisions comes from studying young, healthy brains. But a new paper argues that aging brains have a lot to teach us. By applying cutting-edge computational tools to older brains, researchers @dgsomucla believe we can uncover entirely new insights into how neural circuits maintain stability and flexibility over time. This could move the field from describing cognitive decline to understanding resilience, helping us understand how to extend the years we spend thinking clearly and living fully. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Really proud of this work with @AllyGirasole and @NelsonLabUCSF, as well as Chip Gerfen and Tom Hnasko, digging into the cellular and synaptic differences in striatal direct pathway neurons involved in levodopa-induced dyskinesia. Check it out: cell.com/cell-reports/fullte…

Got together with @synaptokevin & @NeuroMikeRyan from the @SCAgingBrain to discuss #healthyaging. We take a multi-level approach to understand how brains age in the absence of disease. In this sense, aging can be an example of active remodeling rather than degeneration.

Had a lot of fun writing this review with Lukas Oesch and @anne_churchland. Check it out to learn more about recent innovations in "natural" and trained behaviors + how we can keep making progress in the future!
We love natural behavior! Our new review highlights recent work from @cris_niell, @bbo_lab & others. Is natural behavioral all we need to understand brains? We say no & hypothesize why training critters can be hard. Pls post your training thoughts below. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
