For the average person who wants to help Ukraine I think the best thing to do is donate directly to soldiers. For years I've donated to @dzygaspaw it's a Ukrainian charity that works directly with frontline military units to find out what they need and get it for them. It was founded by @dim0kq, former tech worker, current soldier. They have excellent financial reporting and transparency, which is important because corruption is a problem in Ukraine. Donating is easy, you can donate as much or as little as you like. You can pick specific projects to fund, or let Dzygas Paw decide where to spend it. If you have been thinking you want to do something to help Ukrainians, it seems like now is when they can really use it. dzygaspaw.com/

I’ll take a shot at answering one of these good questions. These poor young people are not dying for "no reason". They’re dying because Vladimir Putin's Russia invaded Ukraine and Ukrainians don’t want to be murdered. I hope this helps.

That the Communist hammer and sickle isn’t commonly regarded as evil and offensive as the Nazi swastika is a failure of education.
“Dear Italian students, who today take to the streets carrying flags with the hammer and sickle and wearing T-shirts emblazoned with ‘CCCP’,” began an open letter in Italian by Lithuanian expat Neringa Budryt. “I would like to ask you a question: do you truly know what the symbols you carry represent? And do you know what would have happened to many of you had you openly demonstrated in countries living under the oppression of communist regimes? Let me tell you something. It is easy to display a red flag when, for you, communism is merely an abstract idea of equality, social justice, and rebellion against the system. It is easy to wear a T-shirt with "CCCP" on it when you have never experienced the reality of a communist regime. We come from that part of Europe where communism was not a T-shirt, a symbol of rebellion, or a romanticized notion of equality. It was the system in which we lived—a system we never chose. We know the history of Soviet repression, Stalinist purges, the Gulags, and mass deportations. Above all, we know the word "Siberia"—a place to which thousands of innocent people were forcibly deported, simply for thinking differently. In Siberia—amidst freezing cold, starvation, and forced labor—many lost their lives; those who survived carried the scars of that experience forever. Entire families were torn apart, and generations were denied the chance to live freely in their own homeland. In the countries of the Soviet bloc, censorship, political police, surveillance, and the suppression of dissent drastically curtailed individual freedoms. We grew up in a system where state control permeated even our daily lives. At school, we were required to wear the red necktie of the "Pioneers." We were monitored; they tracked where we went and even whether we attended church. Even faith—a choice that should belong to an individual’s own conscience—could become a cause for suspicion. We used to celebrate Christmas with our windows blacked out, to ensure no one would see us and report us. Because it was forbidden—just like so many other things: jeans, rock music, and all the symbols of a Western lifestyle. My mother returned from a Soviet labor camp. And do you know what happened to her? She was barred from continuing her education because she had been labeled an enemy of communism. Under a communist regime, you could not protest. You risked arrest, imprisonment, interrogation, persecution—and, in certain historical contexts, even death. In the Soviet Union and other communist regimes, political dissent could cost you your freedom and your life. Demonstrations independent of the authorities were not a guaranteed right; they were often suppressed by force. That is why it strikes me to see young Italians proudly displaying the hammer and sickle—symbols associated with regimes that persecuted and imprisoned millions of people. Today, you are free to take to the streets, shout against the government, criticize institutions, and wave your flags precisely because you live in a democracy that grants you these freedoms. Under an authoritarian regime of that kind, protesting against those in power could have landed you in prison. This is not about denying the existence of social injustices, inequalities, or the right to fight for a better world. You are free to take to the streets to demand a more just society—but you should not idealize a system that denied so many people the very things you are free to exercise today: the right to choose, to believe, to speak, and to dissent. Before wearing a T-shirt with "CCCP" on it, listen to those who experienced that world. Talk to the deportees and their descendants; read the accounts of those who endured the gulags and forced exile to Siberia. Learn what it meant to be stripped of your freedom, your home, your loved ones—and even any prospect of a normal life—simply because of your background or your beliefs. Before waving the hammer and sickle, please, study history thoroughly.”

Last night I had the pleasure of attending Calgary Opera's magnificent production of Tosca. The performance was interrupted by a Hamas supporter screaming hate messages from the audience. Evil hates beauty. Supporters of a violent death cult committed to the mass murder of Jews, and the imposition of an Islamist theocracy, are of course blind to the beauty of Puccini's music. Why would they have any regard for the hundreds of brilliant musicians and others who spent thousands of hours preparing to stage such a sublime expression of one of the highest forms of art? Of course, they have no compunction about disrupting a crowd of 2400 people who have gathered to be inspired by that beauty. For the Hamas supporters, and their fellow travellers on the far left, their wicked end justifies any means. In a movement where mass rape, killing and kidnapping of innocent civilians is glorified, they don't think twice about marring or destroying great cultural achievements. Think of the violent mobs in France last week, vandalizing and burning to the ground beautiful symbols of French culture and history, while waving their Palestinian flags as a symbol of destructive violence. There is not an Islamist society on Earth that would permit Tosca to be staged. Most of the greatest achievements and art forms of western culture are considered haram by the dark doctrine of Hamas. So it's perversely fitting that they would disrupt such a performance. We should take them seriously when they show us who they are. And we should remember the aphorism attributed to Prince Myshkin in Doestoevsky's The Idiot: "the world will be saved by beauty."

I just learned that he has no mother or father to speak up for him. And now the Islamic Republic wants to hang him. His name is Ilya Ben Rashid. He is a young Iranian protester He has a younger sister. Now he is facing a death sentence. He was arrested during the January 2026 protests in Iran. A Revolutionary Court in Isfahan sentenced him to death on charges of “waging war against God” for allegedly damaging public property. He is being held in Dastgerd Prison. Reports say he was denied a lawyer of his choice. Imagine facing execution for demanding freedom. We must become his voice. We must stop his execution. Say his name. Save Ilya Ben Rashid. #StopExecutionsInIran

I’m a teacher in BC. This is bullshit. Your children are being taught that some could have the wrong gender souls for their perfectly healthy bodies and are required to keep it secret if your child wants to go by wrong sex pronouns etc which is the first step toward irreversible medical harm and missing body parts.

Gary Mason spent the past year warning that BC Conservatives were a band of MAGA-curious wingnuts, culture-war amateurs, and shambolic leadership disasters who couldn’t be trusted with the province. Now that they’ve actually won, he’s on air calmly explaining that yes, the debt is a mess, the civil service ballooned, healthcare is broken, and the new government will have to make “really tough decisions” like hiring freezes if they want to turn the ship around. No fetal position. No outrage spiral. Just the dry accounting of a columnist who suddenly has to treat the people he spent months dismissing and smearing as serious adults with a mandate Somewhere in Palm Springs a patio is empty, the margaritas are going unpoured, and the US is being shit-talked by proxy. Must be rough @garymasonglobe

1/ 🇷🇸🇷🇺 Vučić just lost Serbia. russia’s most useful Balkan ally called a snap election to cling to power. Students who spent 2 yrs in the streets crushed him. Moscow spent a decade buying influence with cheap gas & political cover. Europe didn't oust him. Serbians did.

An oldie but a goodie. In 1968 a bunch of entitled hippy bastards sent a letter detailing their specious demands to the Warden and Fellows of Wadham College, Oxford. This was their letter of reply, which speaks to how far the academy has since fallen.

“You can’t build a provincial economy on whale watching and coffee shops.” We need to be a province that builds, makes and creates. We need a provincial industrial strategy and we need to get serious about the loss of industrial land to real estate speculation. Once industrial land is converted to other uses, it is extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible, to get it back. And without that land, where exactly do we expect the next generation of manufacturers, skilled tradespeople and industrial employers to go? This is one of the most consequential challenges we face in British Columbia, with a lot of damage already done. I hope the new government makes it an urgent priority.
Do you have the video clip where you said "You cannot build an economy on whale watching and coffee shops"? Want to use it for this week's podcast episode. I suspect it'll go viral LOL 📈
