Because I get so many DMs about this, I decided to create a FAQ about this account:
FAQ
1. My name is Mario Lanza (@MarioJLanza) and I am the sole admin on this account. I'm a longtime Norm and SNL fan who loved all his old Weekend Update stuff. A few years ago I thought it would be fun to share one of his jokes per day here on Twitter, so I created this account. And even I was shocked how fast it took off. Within a year, this page had gone from 10 followers to more than 80k followers. It's amazing to me how much more popular Norm is now, compared to back when he was on SNL. Every day, the follower count for this page just continues to grow.
2. I post two times a day. Once in the morning, and once in the afternoon. Yeah, I know, that doesn't really match the name of the page - "The Norm Macdonald Joke of the Day." But the demand for this page was so huge that I eventually figured it would be best to do two jokes a day. So that's where we are now.
3. As of right now, I am only posting SNL Weekend Update jokes. I might expand one day to include stuff he did after SNL, but right now it's so much work keeping up with this page that I haven't had time to grab all the screencaps I'd want. So yes, as of now, this is all just old SNL Weekend Update jokes.
4. Yes, every one of these was a real Weekend Update joke. I haven't even changed the wording on any of them. These are all Norm's (and Jim Downey's) exact words, timing, pauses, and cadence.
5. Yes you can request any joke that you want. Just send me a DM with any requests you have and I'll try to post that one soon.
6. No, I never post video clips. There are a lot of reasons for this, but the main one is that personally I just think people in the world need to read more. And reading Norm's voice you get a much better sense of how well he used timing, wordplay, and pauses, it just activates an entirely different part of your brain. So no, I will never post video clips on this page. Besides, NBC has erased most of the Norm era from video these days, anyway. I grabbed most of these screencaps off the old Internet Archives episodes more than a decade ago.
7. No, I'm sorry. I can't just post OJ jokes every day. Norm's tenure on SNL was so much more than just that. I also can't just post the Ezra joke every day. But I'll sprinkle those big ones into the rotation, of course.
8. Even though I said I post two times a day, there is actually a special time in the year where I post three jokes a day. And that's my special month-long celebration of Norm in November called NORMVEMBER. For Normvember, I post three jokes per day, and they are 90 of his most famous jokes. I try to do all the really big popular ones. The goal, of course, is to get to people to forward these to everyone they know, and flood Twitter with Norm Macdonald jokes for a month.
9. Yes, I'm aware that not every Norm joke landed. And yes, I DO include a lot of the bombs here as well. I don't just include the bangers on this page. It's fun to remember that Norm bombed hard on at least fifteen percent (maybe even more) of his jokes on Weekend Update. That's what made him so fun. That's probably also a big reason why he was eventually fired. That "I don't give a shit" spirit that the audience was required to like every joke. That attitude was so quintessentially Norm. I hope that comes through on this page.
10. And finally, thank you for asking. Yes you CAN support this page if you enjoy what I've done with it. If you look up at the top of my profile, you can see I've turned on the "tips" option. That's an easy way to say you enjoy this page every day. Alternately, you can support me and my work at buymeacoffee.com/mariolanza or patreon.com/mariolanza
And there, now I never have to answer any of these in DMs anymore.
Enjoy the page! Long live Norm Macdonald! Keep spreading his voice!
-Mario
