In my #SundayCivics interview (sundaycivics.org/episodes/ep…) I urge voters to ask politicians as we approach midterm elections how their policies will forge pathways to the middle class by creating full-time jobs w/ predictable pay & benefits and by lowering housing & childcare costs

Why are bond yields rising? A key reason is that interest payments on the federal debt have exploded and are expected to rise even further.

I can answer that question: the rapid growth of pay-later loans is driven by desperation, not consumer preference. America's middle-class NEVER "wants" to go in debt to pay daily living expenses.

As I discussed on All Things Considered, young adults struggle to find affordable housing & it's to the point that upward mobility for middle-class young adults is vanishing before our very eyes. npr.org/2026/07/28/nx-s1-585…

From the Navy SEAL officer who planned and executed the Bin Laden raid: “In recent months, President Trump, upon advice from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, has relieved or forced the retirement of some of the finest officers that have ever served this nation. I have personally worked with most of them in combat….And this week, in an egregious decision, the president forced General Chris Donahue to step down from his position in command of U.S. Army Europe. Donahue is without question one of the most brilliant officers I know. He is strategically focused, tactically aggressive, personally courageous, exceptionally thoughtful in his planning and execution, and compassionate with his troops. He has the respect of every man and woman who ever served with him—and you can put me at the top of that list.”
ADM McRaven: “I can tell you from experience that Generals C. Q. Brown, Randy George, Jim Mingus, J. P. McGee, Dave Hodne, Jim Slife, and Joe Berger and Admirals Lisa Franchetti and Jamie Sands were war fighters through and through”

Three of the markers of the middle class I discuss in my new book are affordable housing, a good job w/ stable income, & household savings. The bipartisan housing legislation is stalled (nytimes.com/2026/06/24/us/po…)

This bill isn't perfect & won't help most middle-class families buy homes. That said, it'll make housing more affordable for many, & we've got to stop letting perfect be the enemy of "good enough, for now." nytimes.com/2026/06/24/busin…

Fewer people believe in the American Dream of upward mobility. They struggle to become and remain middle class. They can't find or keep jobs. They aren't getting married. They aren't having babies. And politicians don't seem to care.
Sixty-eight percent of respondents in a new Gallup poll said they thought they could reach that legendary ideal, a four-percentage-point drop from the last survey on the topic in 2024.
Their outlook for others was less sunny. wapo.st/4aZ259F

America's middle class is struggling and everybody knows affordability isn't a hoax. The middle class built this country and it's time for politicians to take care of them.
She started writing this book a decade ago — when optimism was already scarce. Now she says the crisis makes the case even stronger.

As a civ pro and remedies professor, my response is - well done. Still looking for the complaint, but B12 controls the venue (fed court), the applicable law (fed & maybe organization-friendly Delaware) & seeks narrowly tailored equitable relief.
NEWS: The Big 12 has filed a legal complaint in federal court against Texas Tech & the Texas AG, seeking declaratory judgement and a preliminary injunction to enforce its bylaws and potentially sanction the school for its plans to play Brendan Sorsby.

Attending my 1st #LawAndSociety meeting where I'll discuss my book on the middle class. Given this grim (and stunning) economic news, looks like I'll need to revise my comments.#LSASF2026
This is stunning.
Personal savings rate April 2025: 5.5%
Personal savings rate April 2026: 2.6%
That's a sharp plunge.
It underscores how squeezed Americans are right now with higher prices and incomes not keeping up.
Maybe you can explain some of this away by Baby Boomers retiring, but not all of it.
