Most Canadians are familiar with the first prime minister, Sir John A Macdonald, but not as much is known about the leaders who came after him. In the new episode of the History Matters podcast, Allan welcomes guest Michael Hill, former history teacher, former artistic director of the Mariposa Folk Festival, and author of The Lost Prime Ministers: Macdonald's Successors Abbott, Thompson, Bowell, and Tupper, to discuss the four prime ministers who led Canada between the death of Sir John A. Macdonald and the election of Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Prompted by the recent unveiling of "The Unfortunate Four" sculpture in Bancroft, Ontario, Hill explores the unique backgrounds, political challenges, and brief tenures of John Abbott, John Thompson, Mackenzie Bowell, and Charles Tupper. The favourite of my myriad copies of #Ulysses. Together with a keyring presented to me by a pal, who sourced coins of significance to fuel my Joyce obsession. A 1904 Penny to mark the year in the book, and a 1922 French Franc to mark the year of publication. #Bloomsday.

For my @EngelsbergIdeas debut I review a collection about William Lyon Mackenzie King, warlord, premier, pervert.
A new collection of essays revisits the life of a séance-holding Presbyterian bachelor whom historians routinely rank as Canada's greatest prime minister, yet one largely ignored by his countrymen. Who really was Mackenzie King, the maker of modern Canada? | Yuan Yi Zhu (@yuanyi_z) engelsbergideas.com/reviews/…

#BookPost. The very best kind of post there is. A Poet in the Family by #DannieAbse. A book I have fond memories of, having, during my schooldays, a long time ago, discovered this in the school library. Looking forward to reading it again. #Books #reading.

Folks, please read if you are allowed to see this note from Twitter jail: I had noticed over the last year that X was bent on keeping me from tweets of followers & vice versa, and that tilt has accelerated since a recent set of additional changes. My chat has also been restricted, and I can't share this note with people I want to thank. Debate on X is confused about these changes, as you would expect, but I have found @grok useful with my questions. The new model assumes that every tweeter should be like @elonmusk--doesn't tweet more than four times a day, says something provocative that stimulates a huge response, and posts less than 50% by retweeting. It's a model that works for some politics, crypto & sex, but not for serious curating & discussion of poetry. In the new X order, I can't welcome newcomers, post each day from a range of blogs and Substacks, promote readings and journals, and the like. If I do, almost no one sees it. The feisty part of me would like to walk, but I am too old to start over elsewhere, and I don't want to lose the ability to post here about my own work. Accordingly, I'm going to stay, but stay at just a bit above life support, at least for a while, in the hope that the X bros will panic when they see posting dropping rather than climbing. Over the last twelve years I have grown very fond of many people here. Be well. Write well.

This is the first script machine I’ve ever lucked across in the wild, of any model/color/configuration. It just happened to be super cool one. The only other identical unit I can find online was listed at Mr & Mrs for $2,250, and it’s a sold listing.
