Ami Yamada (32) has been talking about how she suffered a stroke 10 years ago, while working as a stage actor and idol. While aged 22, she suddenly heard a crisp "pop" and suffered intense tinnitus during the final section of a 2016 concert, collapsing in front of fans. She was rushed to hospital, and awoke a week later to find she had suffered a severe cerebral infarction (stroke), and was unable to move her left arm and leg, and barely able to speak. She was about to give up on life, but then received emotional support from the stage director, who said they'd be waiting for her to rejoin the stage. After years of rehabilitation and hard work, she made a stunning comeback, and in 2023 earned certification as a professional Occupational Therapist, using her own experiences to help heal people with disabilities and strokes. The past is a foreign country. You could drive through Afghanistan as a hippie woman but places like Vietnam were worn torn and China was closed off to the outside world.
Now you can backpack through Vietnam and tour the Forbidden City of Beijing but the old hippie trail is nearly impossible to recreate.
