announcement: i just made the two biggest bets of my year. first, @prcarly is joining medialyst as our founding strategic advisor. second, i'm forward deployed into her agency to help build the first real AI-native PR agency. here's why i think this could be the new model for vertical AI startups: a forward deployed founder shows up with infrastructure, data substrate, distribution, and a fleet of agents already running. something an FDE or a consultant can never bring. then in the other direction - everyone on X is telling founders to start an agency and productize it later. but a year of that wouldn't even scratch the surface of what Carly showed me in one afternoon: my agents were confident about work she took apart in a single sitting. so instead of learning how to build a mediocre agency, I went to sit inside one of the best ones to define the industry together. together we're pointing two very different kinds of judgment at problems no one in this space has cracked. and the rarest part i keep thinking about is you can't buy either side of it. neither of us could have planned this and it's 90% luck we ended up working together. because the person who'd say yes to this deal cold is not the person you want to give equity to. but somehow we're two founders moving at the same velocity, solving both halves of the same problem, while both raising two little kids the same ages with the same founder-brain that can't switch off. i wrote down how we met and my thinking behind all this as an essay, but that's a story for another time. for now I’ll leave you with this: AI is going to make big companies slightly more efficient. but it's going to make small teams like this deadly.

To everyone saying "just go direct with your funding story": Please don't. There are plenty of brilliant, balanced journalists who'll work with you to tell a strong story. I've placed funding stories in outlets from Fortune and CNBC to the WSJ, and every single one was a net positive for the founders and investors involved. Legacy media builds credibility and reputation. It is incredibly valuable for hiring. Don't give up on legacy media, but do work with journalists/publications that you admire and trust.

BREAKING: Business Insider just dropped a bombshell. Journalists there can now use AI to write first drafts… without telling readers: @oliverdarcy from Status first reported yesterday about the memo by editor-in-chief Jamie Heller. It’s a massive shift from outlets like AP, which explicitly requires AI disclosure when used, to BI's "no disclaimers needed" approach. Here's what caught my attention: BI's parent company, Axel Springer, has licensing deals with OpenAI and Microsoft. So when your pitch turns into a BI article, it doesn't just inform readers—it potentially trains the next generation of AI models. Think about that pipeline for a second: Your carefully crafted pitch becomes coverage, which becomes training data, which shapes how future AI understands your industry. PR IMPLICATIONS: 1. The trust gap will widen: Outlets that disclose AI use vs. those that don't will likely see different trust metrics. A recent survey by Journalist’s Resource found 94% of news audiences want AI disclosure. 2. Although journalists must still 'own' the final piece per the memo, there's still going to be SOME kind of AI-driven transformation resulting in a DIFFERENT article than if the journalist had written it without AI. Which model will they use? What biases/preferences will that model inject? How will those shape the final piece? TBD... 3. Expect AI screening of pitches: If journalists are using AI to draft articles, it's only a matter of time before they use it to screen pitches too. What that means and how it’ll affect pitching remains to be seen. BOTTOM LINE: Some publications will continue to bet on trust through disclosure. Others are betting audiences won't care… or know. But either way, it’s going to be very difficult (but very interesting) to predict all the second-order effects from AI taking up more and more real estate in the newsroom. To my PR friends: How are YOU parsing all of this? Sources: status.news/p/business-insid… journalistsresource.org/medi… ap.org/the-definitive-source…

What I promise: that I will do EVERYTHING in my power to make your story exciting and relevant for the right reporter(s) so that they jump on the opportunity to tell it. What I can't promise: anything else.
When clients ask "Can you guarantee coverage?"... I say: "No, but I can guarantee a killer pitch to the right people at the right time. Everything else is up to the journalist."

Thanks to the one and only @PRcarly for her tweets. If it wasn't for her we would never have got this coverage. When I reached to potential journalists I very clearly studied their past stories and headlines and crafted my narrative accordingly. Feature story wasn't even the plan. It was a snowball effect. I wrote to 7 and one covered us. I would say not bad. Thanks once again Carly. I wish one day we can work together.

After several years as a journalist, in 2020 I enrolled for @CIPR_Global's specialized masters in public affairs. The best part of the degree were the lessons on securing B2B press for policy communications. I had to put these lessons - including those provided by @PRcarly @kathy_m_osborne @PRisUs - to the test. My framework: 1. topic can I speak about with zero prep 2. story being covered that needs my expertise 3. reporters covering that are consistent 4. which publication^ is B2B 5. stalk reporters bio and socials 6. write pitch specific to reporters' interests 7. schedule email for reporters time-zone 8. block off time for follow-up call/email 9. facilitate the reporter ROI: quoted in @SPGMarketIntel + @eMarketer + @Forbes + @cmswire + @usnews + @Provoke_News + @TheDrum + @WARCEditors + @IJNet and many more B2B focused pubs. Examples: 16th AUG '22 - S&P Global spglobal.com/market-intellig… 31st AUG '22 - eMarketer emarketer.com/content/us-doj… 11th NOV '22 - Forbes forbes.com/sites/edwardsegal… 29th NOV '22 - CMSwire cmswire.com/digital-marketin… 8th SEP 2023 - US News Report money.usnews.com/money/perso… 22nd JAN 2024 - PRovoke Media provokemedia.com/long-reads/… 23rd SEP 2024 - The Drum thedrum.com/news/2024/09/23/… 19th FEB 2025 - Warc warc.com/content/feed/How_Ca… 8th APR 2025 - IJNet ijnet.org/en/story/10-tips-b… For B2B leaders, secure expert commentary opportunities with Tier-1 publications - prioritizing quality over quantity - is the first actual step to building long-term relationships. And amid the recent news-industry wide layoffs, audiences are migrating to the newsletter (eg @substack) accounts of the reporters they have followed for decades. An example is @alexrkonrad's @upstartsmediaco It's time to redefine tier-1 for audience relevance and focus on unique stories, hot take angles, and creating value for the reader.

Big Tech built an internet that's destroying our kids' mental health, and I'm done watching from the sidelines. Let me reintroduce myself: I'm Tim Estes. After building AI that helped intelligence agencies hunt down terrorists, law enforcement hunt down human traffickers & financial institutions detect illegal activity, I'm now tackling the biggest challenge yet: Using AI to protect our kids from “digital narcotics.” AngelQ, the first AI superbrowser for kids, just launched. Here's why it matters…

So true. And getting a high quality placement in TC or another top tier publication often takes multiple meetings with the reporter. Better to focus on who will write the highest quality story vs the publication.
