"DON'T EVER LET ANYONE TELL YOU THAT TWO DEGREES OF WARMING IS OK." - Dr. Thomas Lovejoy
I was eight years old and have probably never fully appreciated how much my parents, both from South Wales, both teachers will have been affected by this tragedy. Thoughts and love to the whole Aberfan community.
60 years ago to this day, 109 children and 5 teachers went to their school in #Aberfan never to return home again. At 9.15am , the man-made avalanche of 150,000 tonnes of coal slurry, that had been reported to The National Coal Board as a serious danger, was to slide down the nearby mountain and crash into Pantglas Junior School also destroying several nearby houses. As a result, a further seven children and 23 adults also tragically died.
We have visited this community in the past where one can't help but be profoundly moved by the preventable tragedy even many years after it occurred. We never forget the significance of this date. We send our earnest thoughts and prayers to the Aberfan community 🙏

After-school communication expectations can cause anxiety and rob you of your down-time.
One of the most effective ways to navigate this is to set clear boundaries and expectations.

We need to stop trying to fix behaviour & start supporting nervous systems & brain states.
If we keep viewing behaviour through a lens of punitive measures & outdated frameworks we miss the brain & nervous system completely.
This is where real change begins.

'Families, schools, technology companies, policymakers and wider society all have responsibilities. But giving children the knowledge, language and confidence to understand healthy relationships and challenge harmful behaviour is a fundamental #safeguarding tool. Safeguarding cannot only begin when something has gone wrong. Prevention has to be part of the answer.'

You don’t have to be the smartest person in the room to be a strong leader.
In fact, trying to convince everyone that you are might make you a less effective leader.
One of the challenges of becoming a school administrator is that suddenly you’re responsible for things you don’t know that much about.
Maybe you taught high school PE, and now you’re observing an elementary reading lesson.
Maybe you taught chemistry, and now you’re having conversations about special education, grading practices, or elementary math.
Maybe you're sitting in a meeting listening to teachers discuss an instructional strategy you’ve never used.
You have two choices.
You can pretend you know more than you do.
Or you can say:
“I don’t know much about this. Help me understand.”
I think the second response requires more confidence than the first.
One principal I interviewed for "The Instructional Leader in You" told me, “You can’t always be the smartest guy in the room.”
Exactly.
Your teachers don't expect you to know everything. And they probably know when you're pretending.
Great leaders are comfortable saying:
“I don’t know.”
“Tell me more.”
“What do you think?”
“I need some help understanding this.”
“I was wrong about that.”
There is vulnerability in those statements.
But there is also tremendous strength.
Insecure leaders can feel threatened by what they don't know. Secure leaders get curious about it.
And perhaps that's one of the great paradoxes of leadership:
The more confident you become in who you are, the less you need everyone else to believe you have all the answers.
You don't have to be the smartest person in the room.
You just need to be humble enough to keep learning from the people who are.
