Thousands marched in 10 cities across #Türkiye against the jailing of journalists, censorship and state takeovers of news outlets. These attacks restrict the public’s right to know what those in power are doing — and to hold them accountable.

B’Tselem urgently calls on governments and international institutions to act now, using all means available under international law, to prevent the forcible displacement of Palestinian civilians, collective punishment and extensive unlawful destruction in Hebron. Israeli leaders are openly declaring their intentions, and actions on the ground have already begun.
Following the shooting near Hebron on 23 October, in which two Israeli soldiers were killed, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz openly announced plans to forcibly displace Palestinian residents and carry out extensive destruction in the area.
In a statement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared: “We will apply in the cities the successful offensive model we implemented in the refugee camps.”
That same model has already displaced more than 33,000 Palestinians in the northern West Bank. Now, Israeli leaders are threatening to bring the same mass displacement and destruction to Hebron.
Implementation has already begun. Israeli forces imposed a cordon on Hebron and Halhul, while the Civil Administration began demolishing Palestinian structures in the neighborhood of Farsh al-Hawa. At the same time, Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced the establishment of four new settlement farming outposts in the South Hebron Hills.
Israeli leaders are openly announcing plans for collective punishment and acts that could constitute war crimes. These plans echo Israel’s devastating operations as part of the genocide in Gaza and mark a further escalation of its ongoing campaign of ethnic cleansing as part of the Elimination Project in the West Bank: the systematic dismantling of Palestinian collective life while expanding settlements and entrenching permanent Israeli control.
The world cannot stand by as Israel continues its assault on Palestinians, waiting for yet more neighborhoods to be emptied and erased before intervening, despite what we have already witnessed in Gaza and the northern West Bank. Governments and international bodies must act now to prevent these crimes and protect Palestinian civilians.
On #UNDay, we recall why the UN was founded: to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.
As international law comes under attack and the UN is undermined, we must defend international law, human rights and peace.
The world needs a stronger UN, not a weaker one.
2/ Why isn’t Sweden and EU taking stronger action against Trump’s attacks on international law? The Swedish government and the European Commission must now move from words to action.

🧵 Journalists in Serbia are facing record levels of physical violence, death threats, and online smear campaigns. Those covering protests experience deliberate targeting and arbitrary detention.
Ahead of elections, journalists can take the following steps to prepare themselves for possible attacks.

10 journalists from Serbia's N1 resigned today. The channel was for a long time the only TV channel that issued reports critical of the government. In May, its parent company was sold to to Luxembourg-based European Future Media Investments, managed by Alpac Capital. (After Alpac bought Euronews in 2022, reporters from Direkt36 and Le Monde showed that the acquisition was partly financed by Hungarian state capital and companies connected to the political network of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.)
But back to the resignations. Here's an excerpt of the letter the 10 journalists sent to their management, which was shared with me:
"Under the new management, we have witnessed falsehoods, manipulation, insidious censorship, the public discrediting of colleagues, their professional marginalisation, insults and humiliation, changes to programme editors, and a refusal to engage in open
discussions about the problems.
While genuine dialogue within the newsroom has been eliminated, the illusion of dialogue is being created on air. We do not want to take part in misleading our audience through the simulation of debates, the forced presentation of opposing political actors as equivalent, and the staging of normality while disregarding the authorities’ long-standing and well-documented treatment of N1, as well as the broader social and political context in which we live and work.
Precisely because Serbia is facing the most unpredictable elections since N1 was established, we refuse, under these circumstances, to lend legitimacy to an editorial policy we cannot stand behind. The new management has restricted our scope for action to such an extent that our remaining at N1 would have no impact on what its programming looks like in the days ahead."

Israeli settlements have massively expanded in the occupied West Bank under the current Israeli government – along with a major spike in violent attacks on Palestinians. @JDiamond1 reports on how the government has allowed this and whether elections could prompt any change.

The UN warns: Current policies put the world on track for 2.8°C warming. Do world leaders truly understand what is at stake? Returning to 1.5°C requires a 45% emissions cut by 2035. #climate #COP31
The chance to keep global warming below 1.5°C with no overshoot is gone.
But urgent action can still limit the overshoot and bring warming back to 1.5°C by 2100.
Current policies, however, put the 🌎 on course for up to 2.8°C this century.

3/ However, it is still possible to bring global warming back down to 1.5°C before 2100. The UN highlights that renewable energy and effective climate policies have already delivered significant emissions reductions.

Our Palestinian partners are appealing to the world to take action. Sweden and Europe can still prevent the West Bank from following the same catastrophic path as Gaza. The question is whether we are prepared to use the tools we have before it is too late.
