I can’t reiterate enough how much a love Joy Sullivan’s poetry.
Give us time. Please, just a little longer in these bones.

I just finished “Theo of Golden” — this post is timely for me. The way Theo asked questions to learn about each individual’s experience. I truly believe if we approached each other with this level of dignity and respect, we would be hard pressed to turn to hatred or annoyance.

Joy Sullivan’s book with the same title is one of my favorite poetry books. It’s so worth reading if you haven’t read it yet.

That entire collection of poems is so good! I was fortunate enough to see Maggie read from that book at an event Cleveland. Her writing is fire!
AND NOW we close out the week with this favorite Maggie Smith poem

I share this poem with 8th graders, pairing it with Jason Reynolds Long Way Down. I’ve always appreciated this poem.
Saw a tweet from a sozzled account talking trash about this poem, one of the finest poems of the 20th century, & I just want to say it's so good it has inspired a new form. So much to unpack: the symbolic 'shovel' in the subtitle, the monosyllabic word choice, its enjambment, etc
