Allow me to see if I can explain, however verbose I may be. This might be a long one! 🧵 The trend started when @redteneri's post went viral, with people instantly falling in love with the character design. There were quickly people asking REDTEN to draw her making out with other women from the wizarding world, to which he responded with “I drew this to make guys yearn again. Sorry, but stop asking me to turn it into yuri or something.” and “A few people won't shut up in my dms about how great it would be if she were trans. 1) Don't be annoying, I will block you. 2) That just wouldn't work.” This solidified that this character was made for normal people, not for a particular loud, annoying minority. In addition, those normal people immediately were taken with that word REDTEN used - “yearn”. For years now our culture has been inundated with an oppressive, grim, and depressing outlook on life. It has been unavoidable, to say the least. For women, it’s “would you choose the man or the bear,” or “it’s not ALL men, but it’s ALWAYS a man”, or merely the fact that the #1 clientele for pornography is men, while simultaneous the people shaming women for producing that pornography are, buy and large, men. These ideas stem from the valid critique that modern men have the capacity for incredible violence, hostility, and hypocrisy, and there is no shortage of stories of men doing just that. For men, it’s seeing things like Lindsay Clancy killing her children and vast swaths of people supporting her, or how it feels like 9 times out of 10, when a woman online says something, there’s an OnlyFans link in her bio, or how women seem to have opposite reactions to Shane Gillis’ gym jokes and Sydney Sweeney’s prediction market ads. These observations have led to the valid concern that modern women have the capacity for incredible violence, immodesty, and hypocrisy, and there is no shortage of stories of women doing just that. Regardless of how anyone feels on these subjects (I’m just one man, I’m definitely under no illusion that I’m going to solve modern gender wars by myself), the prognosis isn’t looking good. Popular culture reflects this - in feminist media, men are often depicted as toxically masculine or inept while women are depicted as “empowered” and without need of a man. In anti-feminist media, women are often depicted as sexually deviant or stupid while men are depicted as "empowered" and without need of a woman. I got married pretty quickly, so I can’t personally speak to this too well, but I have heard multiple stories about how horrific the dating scene is today. After all, with how much tension there is between men and women, why would we want to even be together? Enter REDTEN, and the word “yearn”. A killer character design combined with the purpose to bring desire back to male-female relationships. Then, a (rather genius, in my opinion) choice to refer to the character as Malfoid, which, on top of being a pun, was a way to gatekeep the character from that particular loud, annoying minority. Then an artist named @yunayuispink, being a normal person who fell in love with the character design, posted some fanart on Bluesky where she got insane amounts of hate because of the successful gatekeeping. Yunayu made the choice to not give in to the hate, and continued posting what she wanted anyways. This further solidified that Malfoid belongs to us normal people, and not to that particular loud, annoying minority. These things, plus another that I'll get to later, were the catalyst for the explosion of fan creations, if I had to point to it. Fanart, fanfiction, songs, and yearning. Oh, the yearning. Yearning for what? Not for the fictional Malfoid or the fictional Harry, but for real relationship. To find someone worthy of desire, and simultaneously to be someone worthy of desire. To love, and to be loved. For men, it’s the idea that they can find someone pretty and confident, who might still be a little rough around the edges, and fall in love with them. Someone worthy of being loved and desired. That they could become a Harry - someone worthy of being loved in return. That they could make sacrifices of themselves, perhaps utilizing their capacity for violence, to protect that which they love against the "Dark Lords" of this world, and that their someone would admire their sacrifice, support them when they falter against those evils, and make their sacrifice worth it. For women (once again, trying my best at diagnosis considering that I am not a man), I hope it's the idea that they can find someone handsome and strong, who might still be a little rough around the edges, and fall in love with them. That they could become a Malfoid - someone worthy of being loved and desired in return. That they could find someone who loves them enough to sacrifice for them, someone admirable, kind, and dangerous, someone who will protect them against the "Dark Lords" of this world, and that they could support when their someone falters against those evils, that they could make their sacrifice worth it. Furthermore, there has been another aspect to the trend that has inspired the creation of culture from these artists - and that is the observation many of us have had that J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World, beloved though it is, has some imperfections. These imperfections do not necessarily make the story worse or bad at all, but they do allow aspiring authors, dreamers, and yearners to "fill in the gaps", so to speak. The most impactful one that I'll point to was @MaroonR19's "fate defying expelliarmus", a photo of Harry and Malfoid both holding a single wand, simultaneously casting the spell that brought an end to the Dark Lord. This, in the opinion of many Malfoid enjoyers, would have been a perfect book-end to the canon story of Harry Potter; love stopped Voldemort that night at Godric's Hollow, and love, fully realized between two people who once were at odds with one another, stopped him again. Now, those who have read the books realize that Rowling actually did write this into the canon story (whether it was Snape's love for Lily Potter that drove him to side with Dumbledore, eventually spelling Voldemort's defeat, or the same love that Lily had for Harry rebounding, and Voldemort grafting a piece of his soul onto Harry - that one sacrifice Lily made saved him twice), but it did not resonate as firmly as this idea has. I've seen all different kinds of thoughts on Rowling's gaps in the storytelling; whether it's Ginny's lackluster romance story, Draco Malfoy's lack of a fully-fledged redemption arc, how Harry had more chemistry than Ron did with Hermione (this last critique is, admittedly, more understandable from people who only watched the movies), or the fact that the theme of love conquering evil seems to play second fiddle for fetch quests and elder wand shenanigans in The Deathly Hallows. The Malfoid-enjoying community has taken to creating art and stories that provide alternative ideas to these points, and however cringe outsiders may find it, these Harry Potter fanfictions and alternate universes have been, on the large, wholesome; notably different than the reputation that Harry Potter fanfictions from a decade and a half ago. Malfoid enjoyers are having fun spending time dreaming up scenarios where Harry and Dracaena (I'm not playing favorites with the name, just using it as it's the one I see most frequently) fall in love at the Yule Ball, scenarios in the future where they have a family with little kids running around, or where one or both of them return to Hogwarts as adults as professors. A little bit of a wholesome snapshot into where Rowling's beloved story could have gone, were the seemingly small change made to swap Draco Malfoy for a different character, Dracaena Malfoy. To me, it's genuinely impressive how much such a change improves the story. The community is very wide, and many people have different ideas, often at odds or otherwise contradicting each other. There are artists who use AI as a tool, people who use AI to entirely generate "new scenes" for an alternate universe, and artists who despise AI altogether. But despite these conflicting ideas, they all have agreed chiefly on one main idea: Malfoid is worth yearning for.

I've actually asked people about the point or motivation behind the trend. No one has ever given an answer. Usually the thread turns weird in the avoiding answering.

My response definitely got misread on a few questions, which mellowed my results out quite a bit, but this seems more accurate than most polls I've done. And Idk why it says Kirk, I'm way farther right than him

Women's jobs are fake (that one's partially a joke) Women were happier when the couldn't vote and sex was between one husband and one wife. If anybody gets an abortion, for any reason the doctor, the mom, and anybody that influenced her should be put to death publicly.

I saw someone essentially say that pornographic/lewd Malfoid fanart is good because sex is the point of romance. THIS, I fear, is another example of the way pornography has damaged people. 🧵 That idea misses the entire point of the Malfoid trend at large. To be fair, Malfoid has gotten so big it broke containment and now means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. That being said, I think the vast majority of those who enjoy this trend agree that Malfoid isn’t about sex, it’s about yearning. To yearn for something, to long for it, is to deeply and often melancholically desire it. That sense of melancholy often stems from the understanding that whatever the object of your desire is will be difficult to obtain. Men are yearning for Malfoid because finding a woman like her is incredibly difficult, but she’s worth it. People are writing stories, making art, and changing themselves for the better in an effort to even get close to the feeling of achievement - to get close to her. Making pornographic art in this movement cheapens all of this. The object of desire becomes not the woman, but her body. The way to express this desire becomes not hard work and effort, but masturbation. Looking at images on a screen and allowing yourself to be titillated will poison your soul against improvement, and you will seek to get your jollies off however you can rather than by becoming the kind of man worthy of a Malfoid, or the kind of woman worthy of a Harry. Certainly, it is true that Harry and Malfoid are sexually attracted to each other. It’s also true that the vast swaths of wonderful illustrators in this movement depict Malfoid as sexually attractive. But Malfoid being sexually attractive doesn’t innately reduce her to the point of objectification. Beauty exists, and Malfoid is beautiful. This aspect of her character is a virtue - it’s something that men often find lacking in modern women. To be fair, it’s also a quality that women find lacking in modern men, so there’s blame to go around. But that’s why people have started going to the gym over this trend, in pursuit of beauty. Beauty may also easily be corrupted. Because beauty is a virtue, it goes hand in hand with other virtues - love, self-control, modesty, etc. - and if any of these other virtues are lacking in a person, so too does their beauty. Portraying Malfoid as a loose woman, exposing herself and engaging in all kinds of indecency, makes her less beautiful. It may make her “hot” or otherwise “sexy”, but this is a pornographic debasing of her. Those depictions are not worth your desire. Malfoid is modest, in both dress and in mannerism; of course she is, as the heiress to the Malfoy name. And the people who get the trend don’t portray her as a ditz or an airhead, but as a confident, even prideful woman (it’s worth noting that such depictions have her putting down her supremacist pride in her bloodline and accepting her love for Harry, humbling herself, which is a virtue). Keep Malfoid modest. Yearn for something greater.
They're right. Malfoid is, actually, the perfect example of how much damage pornography can do to men. And women.

Counterpoint: "International Law" is just how we explain the United States Navy to children and invalids, and the Navy ain't gonna do anything to stop him.

Here, I'll make this make sense. Ever see one of those fight videos where a woman keeps slapping some long-suffering dude until he finally loses patience and sits her down on the pavement with a single right cross? Go find one. Look at her face. Before all the crying. See that? Utter shock. She's completely and utterly flabbergasted that someone dude finally laid one on her. She never expects it, no matter what she was doing five seconds before, or for fifteen years before. She never even considers the possibility. No matter what, she always reacts to that ass-kicking as if it just fell out of the sky. Understand why, and a great deal of women's behavior won't seem so bizarre. Women never participated in tribal warfare. They were prizes, not contestants. They may have sometimes had a vested interest in the outcome. Or, judging by the books they read, they may have sometimes simply preferred whoever was better at violence. Neither of these ideas is the point. The point is that the violence was not directed at them. This is how women's hardwiring evolved. To most women, violence is something that happens to other people. They walk around in an invisible bubble labelled "non-combatant", believing this will keep them safe. Often, it will. Women are targeted for violence far less often than men. They are far safer walking around at night, sketchy area or not. We know this. We have the numbers. This means that women are seldom afraid of actual violence even when they should be (because far less is not zero). Because to a great number of them, violence simply isn't real. What they fear is loss of status within the tribe. Social threats, unlike physical threats, are immediately, viscerally real to them, always. So is quite possible for a woman to be more afraid of an icky guy hitting on her, which reduces her social status, a threat she believes in, than a man pointing a gun at her, a threat which she doesn't. This may sound unbelievable. It may sound incredible. You may be asking yourself what kind of retard looks down the barrel of a handgun and never considers the possibility that a guy willing to point it at you might be willing to press the trigger. But retardation has nothing to do with it. Most of how we think about risk is hardwired in, and it takes a great deal of training to actually think about that risk in a mathematical or abstract way instead of using the feelings you have in your tum-tum. Thinking about risk using data rather than feels is so difficult for humans that there is an entire career path (actuary) for doing just that one thing. The vast majority of Western women have never been punched in the face. Not never in their adult lives, but actually never, period, full stop. So when men talk about violence... risks, motivations, costs, benefits, needs... they simply have no idea what we are even talking about. Violence is an abstraction to them. A theory. But loss of social status is a real and daily terror. This why women will cheer for the destruction of civilization rather than disagree with their friends.
Guy who asked me out is scarier than the guy who robbed me at gun point. Woman logic.

Let me point something out here. Our hero shooter may not have scored a hit on the bad guy. Our hero shooter may have received effective fire when he engaged the bad guy. Leftist weirdos may try to use these facts AGAINST our hero. The reason why we cheer is not because he "won" the gunfight. We cheer because in a world full of people running away or recording on their phones, our hero acted selflessly and put his life on the line for others. "Greater love hath no man." To me, the outcome doesn't matter. What matters is whether or not you have the spine required to fight back against evil when it appears. The valkyries don't take the winners to Valhalla, they take the warriors.
