interpretability might be the most important scientific problem in the world right now, as I don't think we can solve alignment if we don't know what we're building. I think I have good news about it. I co-authored early work in mechanistic interpretability at OpenAI and came away pessimistic, because neural networks appeared to fold into arbitrary tangled knots. years later, I started openai's first large-scale automated interpretability project, finding about 2% of neurons legible with the primitive tools we had with modern agentic tools and a much closer look, the picture looks totally different. the vast majority in models up to trillions of parameters are legible, and their circuits beautiful. many famous examples of tangled neurons turned out to be misunderstood. The roadblocks I expected mostly aren't there. I now think ambitious interpretability will be solved by the time we need it most, and possibly quite soon, as automated scientists keep improving. it may be a bitter lesson for interpretability: the simple thing, at absurd scale, works already-clean.goodfire.com/

RL generalization optimists in shambles.
whole team feels dumb now, but it's true, we did not explicitly train our model on 3d demo games obviously in retrospect we probably should've done a bit of that... but no regrets, please try muse wonder on your actual coding work!

The thing I hate about poly circles is that as a woman it feels inescapable that I am seen and treated as a sex object. When I work with more professional industries, I can be an ice queen, and the relationship stays professional. When I'm in tech, at least I can say "I'm taken" and we keep the focus on the tech. In settings where everyone's poly, suddenly, I am unable to work 1:1 with a man on anything without things feeling a little slimy, and the greater social vibes start feeling cruising mixed with a Hobbesian all-against-all of female intrasexual competition. Like, I was talking about game theory, why am I suddenly receiving a shoulder massage I didn't ask for? Reminded of this passage from Allan Bloom's Closing of the American Mind, and Plato's Republic about the necessity of modesty for women's participation in public life.
this is a huge part of why making events like this a central part of your community is bad. it creates a culture that is toxic and hostile to women

Pure mathematicians have also won shockingly few gold medals in the Winter Olympics.
As measured by Nobel prizes, pure math has made very limited contributions to science. In the last 50 years, math PhDs account for 1/126 Nobel prizes in physics, 3/112 in chemistry, and 0/116 in medicine. They have greater contributions in economics, with 8/88 going to math PhDs

New Anthropic research: A global workspace in language models. Of everything happening in your brain right now, only a tiny fraction is consciously accessible—thoughts you can describe, hold in mind, and reason with. We found a strikingly similar divide inside Claude.

the asian american chungus babies doing culinary gatekeeping are annoying and i hate their poetry of unbelonging. they are overly sensitive because the only connection they have to their culture is food since even learning the language is too much effort for them.

New Anthropic research: Natural Language Autoencoders. Models like Claude talk in words but think in numbers. The numbers—called activations—encode Claude’s thoughts, but not in a language we can read. Here, we train Claude to translate its activations into human-readable text.
