A bright light and a mentor to me and many others has left us. RIP Dick, you will be missed.
It is with heavy hearts that we say farewell to Professor Emeritus Benedict Gross, who passed away in December, 2025. We collected stories, anecdotes, and recollections about Gross’ impact on the lives of his friends, colleagues, and former students. math.harvard.edu/in-memory-o…

One of our new Gemma open models, Cell2Sentence-Scale, has identified a novel cancer therapy pathway that’s been validated experimentally in living cells. Developed w/ @GoogleDeepMind & @Yale University, it looks deep into how to represent cells & biological information for AI ↓
⚕️ Introducing C2S-Scale 27B, our new Gemma open model that can translate complex single-cell gene expression data into “cell sentences” that LLMs can understand.

A truly exciting collaboration, emblematizing the best aspirations of our new strategy at @YaleEngineering. Congratulations to @david_van_dijk and colleagues!
C2S, powered by Gemma, is enabling us to generate and test new biological hypotheses — an amazing collaboration with @GoogleAI and @GoogleDeepMind!

Proud to see @Yale's collaboration with Google highlighted by @sundarpichai today. Professor David van Dijk's work at the intersection of medicine and computer science represents the kind of bold, interdisciplinary research that defines our mission at @YaleEngineering!
An exciting milestone for AI in science: Our C2S-Scale 27B foundation model, built with @Yale and based on Gemma, generated a novel hypothesis about cancer cellular behavior, which scientists experimentally validated in living cells.  With more preclinical and clinical tests, this discovery may reveal a promising new pathway for developing therapies to fight cancer.

I used to make this joke with my old friend @RealMcCoyTyner... I'd say not to go past the S on "Steinway." Thank you again to @BassMagOnline for this week's #SundayFunday ;)

I enjoyed moderating a faculty panel on AI and Innovation at the @Yale_Ventures Innovation Sunmit last week. Faculty from @YaleEngineering, @WuTsaiYale, @YaleLawSch, @JacksonYale, and @yale’s Center for Collaborative Arts and Media offered deep and thoughtful insights!

Our new mace was designed and created by Jacob Eldred, Yale MechE ‘24, over two painstaking years. It is a distillation of engineering concepts through history. We are grateful to him for spending so much time and care!
🎓✨ Celebrating our new ceremonial mace! 🌟🔧 Jacob Eldred is ready to led Yale Engineering's procession w/ Dean Jeffrey Brock holding the mace that together w/ faculty & classmates, he crafted to represent every depart. at Yale Engineering! Congrats, Jacob & team! #Yale2024

As we consider plans for the new Engineering campus, we are thinking about "novel" building materials. With new structural improvements, mass timber provides a compelling option. commonedge.org/is-mass-timbe…

On the .xz backdoor. It is hard to see how the developer Jia Tan is innocent. The backdoor was added in 5.6.0 by his account. He contacted Fedora to push them to move to 5.6.0. There was a problem with valgrind, they worked with hi to resolve it. He commits the fix in 5.6.1.

This will likely get spun in various ways, but it's a great example both of the power and the potential vulnerabilities in open source - someone being annoyed by a 500ms delay in ssh login times results in a massive exploit being revealed and fixed.
Andres Freund, the principal software engineer at Microsoft who discovered the xz backdoor really does deserve a big pat on the back. 👏 The outcome could have been much, much worse.

I agree with @GerkenHeather! It seems that this mode of collaboration could have deep impacts in how we think about a range of AI assisted logical tasks. Looking forward to building this partnership with @YaleLawSch!
The AI work being done by Scott Shapiro, @scottjshapiro, and Ruzica Piskac is simply extraordinary. It's an amazing interdisciplinary partnership that will make a huge difference in the world. news.yale.edu/2024/03/25/ais…
