The 960th anniversary of Hastings has just passed. Most people think they know the Norman story: 1066, William the Conqueror, the Bayeux Tapestry. Our final two @EmpirePodUK episodes with @peterfrankopan show how much of it you don't know — and it's utterly fabulous stuff. 🧵

Alas this is true. Quite possibly the most brilliant historian I ever met, but also a thoroughly decent human being. May he rest in peace.
I haven't yet heard an official confirmation from the History Faculty but news are coming from many quarters that Chris Wickham, the greatest medieval historian of our time, has died after a short but awful illness. There is a great silence over the earth.

Line management in an academic context is such an almighty waste of time. It’s such a tragedy to know that so many talented teachers and researchers are frittering their energies on it.

To paraphrase the commentator who welcomed Obama as America’s first Black president, ‘Is Andy Burnham Catholic? He’s Catholic enough.’ Terrific piece by @James_Macintyre
As the 🇬🇧 Prime Minister settles into the job, @James_Macintyre looks at how ✝️ religion has shaped his politics: ‘Although much has been written about it, the relationship between Mr Burnham and the RC Church remains an enigma.’ #ChurchNews #AndyBurnham churchtimes.co.uk/articles/2…

I’m born in the USA, but I don’t remember this clown raising it in my 19 years as an MP and 5 successful elections.
The front runner being foisted on the people of Holborn by Labour to replace the former Prime Minister Keir Starmer in our Parliament was born in Somalia. Do you understand what’s happening?

Originally a royal castle commanding narrow coastal route crossing 'the Mounth' [Grampians]. Dún Foither besieged in 681, prob. by Bridei of Fortriu; Domnall II died there fighting 'heathens' [Vikings] in 900; visited by Athelstan in 934 during England's 1st invasion of Scotland
Dunnottar Castle near Stonehaven (Scotland) reconstruction mock-up. A Keith family stronghold built over earlier wooden buildings burnt down by William Wallace in 1297. Site used for the filming of Mel Gibson's Hamlet in 1990. #DunnottarCastle #ScottishCastles

News emerging that Exeter University's teaching staff has been reduced. Culling the humanities is heartbreaking. It is also dangerous. My piece in the Spectator.
Big news here yesterday: we’ve avoided compulsory redundancies - solely because some of our brilliant colleagues took voluntary redundancy … 1/3

A few people asking about Reform UK's proposal to increase the personal allowance to £15k. Their maths appear to be out by about £2bn, and they may accidentally be creating a new top marginal rate of 69.5%. Thread:

It's very confusing to see people on the Left calling for more regulation of the press. All hard and soft law regulating the press has been used - and is used - by the wealthy and powerful to silence their critics.
