I recorded a version of the guest lecture I gave to art students at Edinburgh last week. I hope you all enjoy it. Includes all sorts of fun stuff about rats, Baudelaire, Walter Benjamin, arte povera, Otto Rene Castillo, and more! youtube.com/watch?v=i3mNus-y…
Another day wondering if I can afford a copy of the latest critical edition of the primary source text I'm working on, which isn't stocked in any British uni library outside of Oxford and Cambridge, isn't in the National Library of Scotland, and which my uni won't buy.

🧵For any of you architecture and design firms involved in building for universities (that's you @Hawkins_Brown, @Bennettsassoc, @HLMArchitects, @AlliesMorrison, and whoever else), can you please get it into your heads that whatever fantasy you might have about research
full of sources? That's right, it doesn't exist. Either people are working with sources, looking for things and getting to know things, or people are working together on a set of sources they have already established and people already have a copy. But nobody is ever doing these
At some level if you want a society where most of the value is derived from a deregulated financial sector and the wealthy owning the homes of the poor, you probably don’t need universities. Right now, for every £1 spent in Britain visiting art galleries, £3 is spent on cocaine.
Can I propose an EFEF: the Excellence Framework Excellence Framework will require all Excellence Frameworks to provide an auditable submission of their undertakings over the last two decades in order to decide which future Excellence Frameworks we should prioritise funding.

I am not given to hyperbole when it comes to university industrial relations, but this feels like an existential event. The heart of the university is being torn out, with long-lasting consequences. These strikes are a last-ditch attempt to stop that. Will anyone listen?
