Currently, alarming posts make the rounds claiming that Sony has forced physical games to suddenly need an online update. Before you panic please make sure it's not just the game asking for the necessary firmware that IS ALWAYS ON DISC: youtu.be/bBVhsLglz9s?is=0sZ0…

I see a lot of people expressing shock and sadness over BioWare shutting down. And I get it. But here's the uncomfortable truth: The BioWare that made Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, KOTOR, Dragon Age: Origins and the original Mass Effect trilogy had largely ceased to exist long before yesterday's announcement. BioWare's decline began around the time the doctors left and much like what happened at Blizzard, most of the original talent responsible for building those legendary franchises had moved on years ago. What remained was the brand. The IP. Basically just the name on the building. But a studio's name doesn't make great games. Insanely talented people do. And that's the lesson our industry somehow keeps refusing to learn. The people who built those studios, who poured their blood, sweat and tears into establishing their creative identities were the actual assets. Their experience, their taste, their leadership, their ability to recognize what made a game special in the first place was always the thing that mattered, not the brand. You can't simply replace those people, keep the logo on the door and expect the magic to continue. Yet, that's precisely what publishers have been doing for the past 10-20 years. They've spent billions acquiring studios and IPs, seemingly under the assumption that the creative output would continue regardless of who was actually making the games. And when the original talent inevitably left, the remaining teams were expected to fill shoes that were often impossibly large, without necessarily having the experience, leadership or creative vision required to do so. And... the results speak for themselves. I think we'll eventually look back at the COVID-era acquisition frenzy as one of the most destructive periods in the history of our industry. Publishers were buying studios left and right, paying absurd valuations mostly just to secure IPs... and developers were often all too happy to cash out. At Moon Studios, we got quite a bit of crap for refusing to sell when seemingly everyone else was getting acquired. I remember telling our team back then that I'd seen this movie before. The exact same thing happened in the 90s, when EA went on its acquisition spree. Studios were bought, their founders and creative leaders gradually lost the freedom to make the games they believed in, the original talent became frustrated and left and eventually the studios all became a Ship of Theseus. History doesn't repeat itself perfectly, but it sure as hell rhymes, and that's exactly why I never wanted Moon to end up in that position. And I don't think we're even halfway through the ultimate fallout of the latest acquisition frenzy. There's going to be a very rude awakening for quite a few publishers when they discover that the studios they acquired for billions are worth a fraction of what they paid. And that shoving ideology down peoples throats ultimately came at a cost that they didn't quite grasp. They didn't actually buy the creative vision, the institutional knowledge or the culture responsible for making those studios successful. They bought the names, the buildings, the IPs and whatever teams happened to be there at the time. But those things don't matter at all. You can buy a studio. You can buy its IP. You can even buy its entire back catalogue. But you can't buy the magic that made those games special in the first place. And the sooner our industry understands that, the better.

We have temporarily taken the site offline. This is Jan, the real CEO of Playasia. After weeks of increasingly sophisticated and relentless attacks against us and several of our trusted partners, we made the decision to go dark while we complete a full security audit and harden our systems. This is not a step we take lightly. Playasia has been our home, and your home, for nearly 24 years, and the thought of stepping away even for a short while breaks my heart. These attacks are not random. From what we have seen in the attackers' own source code comments, we are listed as one numbered goal among tens of thousands of other targets. That tells us this is a coordinated, systemic campaign, not something aimed only at Playasia. Watching our team work around the clock, exhausted but still fighting to protect what we have built together, has brought me to tears more than once. Many of them have families who depend on them. I have my own. The passion that has driven this community of gamers serving fellow gamers for over two decades is something we will not let anyone take from us. We have reported everything to the relevant authorities and cybercrime units worldwide and continue to share every detail that can help them pursue those responsible. We are doing everything in our power to protect our customers, our partners, and our people. Your support over the years has meant more than I know how to say. Please stay tuned for updates on our social channels and here. We will be back. Jan

Looks like there is an upswell of game-key card defenders recently. Mainly bringing the old short-sighted "you can still download Wii" argument, as if the future Nintendo even tells you about would never come. Plus, Sony's shown how fast the future can approach. Don't be naive!

The issue with discs vs downloads isn't simply technological, it's also economic, social, behavioural, etc. To start off, I have far fewer property rights with digital products compared to physical ones. I can't lend or resell it in the same fashion, were I to choose to. My ability to use the product may also be switched off at some point; Sony has announced the closure of the PS3 and Vita stores, closed the PlayStation Mobile one years ago, and has repeatedly removed movies and TV shows that customers have paid for over the years. This is not simply a Sony issue; look at the announcement that the Legacy Games store is closing in a couple of months, or any of the other store or online game closures, for instance. My physical media don't stop working simply because it has become unprofitable for a company to keep supporting my use of that media; a physical disc will keep working until it is lost or destroyed. Additional Sony specific issues include account closures in you're inactive for three years (with the loss of all purchases), the spate of PSN account thefts (with reportedly little help from Sony in recovering many of them). That's all even before you look at the economic costs for customers. Studies have found physical games to be less expensive than digital games approximately 91% of the time, with research tied to the SMC lawsuit in the Netherlands citing an average 42% difference in price. Many customers also like physical media, be it games, films, music, books, etc. as it gives them something tangible. It provides more 'worth' for your money. If a customer buys a digital item, it often (not always) has no more value to them than if they simply pirated it. Long story short, there's a lot more to look at here than just downloads are easier than printing discs.

A seemingly Sony-contracted analyst firm publishes a report to discredit the pro-disc backlash ALL THE WAY BACK ON SEPTEMBER 3. Only now, shortly before Sony's next earnings call, the "story" spreads. Take a good critical look at who is parroting this right now.
