Histories of 'McCarthyism' ignore Puerto Rico - and yet J Edgar Hoover was so obsessed with defeating its independence movement that he mounted more Smith Act prosecutions there than in any US state except California and New York. Check it out here: steve-howell.com/cold-war-pu…

Here's US senator Chris Murphy boasting in 2014 that he encouraged the overthrow of Ukraine's elected president at a rally in Kyiv. That's the equivalent not of a few social media posts but of a Russian politician inciting the overthrow of Macron in Paris. Murphy's justification was that *Washington* had decided that Viktor Yanukovych no longer had "legitimacy." Interviewed here after Yanukovych was overthrown, he says: “I think it was our role, including through sanctions and the threat of sanctions, that in part forced Yanukovych from office…the clear position of the United States has in part been what has led to this change in regime.”
According to security officials, pro-Russian and far-right social media accounts linked to previous disinformation campaigns have spread violent videos in an attempt to sow more chaos ft.trib.al/t4nxjpO

The shadow foreign secretary appears not to know that Reagan was talking about a country that no longer exists. But, that aside, Tugendhat scores an own goal because he highlights how it was possible for Reagan to hate the Soviet Union and yet do business with its leader.
President Putin is a murderer. His soldiers use rape as a weapon. He has launched wars costing thousands of lives. His agents have stolen children and destroyed families. Russia today is what President Reagan correctly called it: the evil empire.

I am once again calling for a moratorium on all boomer analogizing of every modern war to WW2. You don't need to be like this. Uttering the name Chamberlain to undermine all peace efforts has lost it's efficacy. Churchill is not God. Not every enemy is Hitler. Please stop.
Churchill could have shortened WW2 by years if he had just “done a deal” with Hitler. George Washington could have done a deal to end the American Revolution. Zelenskyy is in good company.

Lviv Regional Council declared 2027 the Year of Roman Shukhevych. Yes, that Roman Shukhevych. 📌The Ukrainian commander of the Nachtigall Battalion (1941), which entered Lviv alongside Nazi German occupation forces on June 30, 1941, when a Ukrainian puppet state, the "ally" of the Third Reich. 📌The very same Hauptmann Roman Shukhevych, Deputy Commander of the 201st Schutzmannschaft Battalion (1942), a unit involved in anti-partisan operations in Nazi-occupied Belarus. 📌The very same commander of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), whose forces carried out mass killings of Polish civilians — women, children, and men — particularly in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia. 📌Under his leadership, UPA units were also implicated in the murder of Jews hiding from the Holocaust and Ukrainians regarded as political enemies, Soviet collaborators, or simply insufficiently loyal. And now the Lviv Regional Council has apparently decided that a country fighting for “freedom and democracy” could find no more inspiring national hero than a commander whose historical legacy is inseparable from atrocities against innocent civilians. What a magnificent choice of role model. Europe, are you taking notes? Is this really the Ukraine that claims to champion good relations with its neighbors? Is this really the Ukraine that European taxpayers are expected to finance while inflation eats away at their purchasing power and their own schools, kindergartens, and universities struggle for funding? Apparently, European citizens are expected to tighten their belts while being told to applaud the glorification of men associated with some of the darkest chapters of Europe's history. And the irony? Europe spent decades teaching its children “Never Again.” Now it is being asked to look the other way when history's darkest figures are dressed up as national heroes in the "beacon of democracy." Quite an achievement. Perhaps the next European history lesson should be titled: “Never Again — Terms and Conditions Apply.”

The UK government is asking Russia how many foreign nationals currently serve in Russia’s Armed Forces. Yet it doesn’t collect figures on how many Britons have served in the Israeli army, even though we revealed more than 2,000 have done so since October 2023. When will it apply the same transparency to its own citizens?

That's Chris Murphy on the left behind John McCain. They were at a rally in Ukraine in 2013 to help the right wing forces overthrow the elected president. The guy on the right, Oleh Tyahnybok, is a neo Nazi. Don't believe anything Murphy says about Ukraine
Ukraine was winning the war, so Trump kneecapped Ukraine to help Russia. I wish it weren’t that simple, but it is. Our president is in bed with our enemies.

Gideon Rachman asks whether the world is “sleepwalking into World War III?” It’s a long read, and not a terribly enlightening one. Rachman tours Ukraine, the Gulf, the Taiwan Strait and the 65 conflicts currently raging around the world, and finds the culprits to be “revisionist powers”, “strongman leaders” and an “axis of adversaries”: Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. In a couple of thousand words, he finds no space at all for the crisis of neoliberal capitalism, albeit he does note the important fact that the G7, which accounted for two-thirds of world output in 1989, is now down to 43 percent. Lenin would have recognised the connection between this decline and the attempt by declining powers to use military means to hold on to a world they can no longer dominate economically. He would have easily recognised “the striving for domination, not for freedom”. More than a century after his death, Lenin remains a far better and more relevant guide to the questions of war and peace than the FT’s chief foreign affairs commentator. Imperialism is hitting out in all directions: • Genocide in Gaza, armed and financed by Washington, London and Berlin. • US-Israeli criminal war on Iran and Lebanon. • A proxy war in Ukraine to weaken and dismember Russia. • Economic warfare against China: tariffs, chip bans, sanctions, blacklists. • A “Donroe Doctrine” under which a president is kidnapped, Cuba is placed under a genocidal energy siege, and election results are determined in Washington DC. • AUKUS, RIMPAC, Talisman Sabre, and a ring of US bases around China’s coast. None of this features as a cause of insecurity in Rachman’s telling. He’s more worried about whether Xi Jinping “considers that America’s Taiwan Relations Act means something”, or whether Putin sees NATO’s Article Five as an “iconclad commitment”. In other words, his proposed path to peace is for the US to make its threats more credible. Peace through NATO. Peace through imperialism. The real guarantee of peace is a multipolar world where no power gets to dictate terms to the rest – exactly what Rachman’s “axis of adversaries” is working towards, and exactly what the West is fighting to prevent.

At the very beginning of the war, someone asked me: “Can Ukraine win?” I still get asked that question today. But do you know what I want to ask in return? What exactly are we going to call victory? Millions of Ukrainians have been forced to leave their homes. Cities have been destroyed. Businesses wiped out. Years of life lost. Mothers bury their sons. Children grow up without fathers. Women spend years waiting for husbands who will never come home. Some have lost their legs. Others, their eyesight. Others, their mental health. Even if the Ukrainian army reaches the Kremlin tomorrow. Even if the Ukrainian flag is raised over it. Tell me, would that be victory? Would that flag bring mothers’ sons back? Bring dead children back to life? Restore broken families? Give back the years stolen from people? Bring back the children who were never born, the weddings that never took place? Because you can win a war on the map and still lose forever the very thing a state exists to protect: human lives. The most terrifying question today is not whether Ukraine can win. It is this: What will be left of Ukraine and its people by the time that victory, if it ever comes, can finally be declared?

Social media is outraged that Steve Witkoff called Putin a “humanitarian.” But real diplomacy isn’t an X thread. We’re used to diplomacy of threats and humiliation. If Witkoff had followed that populist style, the road to Moscow would be closed—no American released today, no channel for ending the war. Saying something difficult to an adversary is harder than posting bold metaphors online. Witkoff remains a working link that can actually help stop the fighting. Online condemnations free no one.

Someone should really tell Merz that when you’re playing the oldest trick in the elites’ book — engineering a fake external threat to distract from the class war you’re waging against your own people — you shouldn’t be so friggin obvious about it. Amateur.

🚨 Cuba has just imported 44 fully electric vehicles that will be used for the public healthcare sector in the Country. Remember, Cuba´s healthcare is free and universal. Our public healthcare has also been one of the most affected sectors because of the US government´s fuel blockade, having a direct toll on mortality rates.

For all those who call us Putin stooges just take the time to watch this BBC 2014 documentary on the rise of fascism in Ukraine. Just give it a watch and call for a negotiated peace. No to Putin No to NATO for a negotiated peace👇
I'm old enough to remember Ukraine before February 2022. Before the great PR makeover. Before billions in British public money started flowing. Before the swastikas were quietly airbrushed out of the picture and yesterday's neo-Nazi problem became today's inconvenient history. Back in January 2015, Ross Kemp travelled to Ukraine for his Extreme World documentary series, investigating the rise of the far right and the Azov Battalion, including its neo-Nazi elements and symbolism. This was British mainstream television, not Russian propaganda. Funny how quickly history gets rewritten when the geopolitical interests change and the public chequebook comes out. Of course, Ukraine's corruption, extremist movements and internal divisions didn't magically disappear in February 2022. But suddenly, mentioning what British journalists had openly reported for years was enough to get you branded a Kremlin sympathiser. Well, here's Ross Kemp reporting from Ukraine in 2015, long before the political rebranding. No Russian bots. No Kremlin script. Just the history they would rather you didn't remember.

So let me get this right: private fossil fuel companies will have the go-ahead to extract even more planet-endangering fossil fuels so they can sell it to us on the spot market at huge prices for... what, exactly? Is this going to reduce our diesel prices by even a penny? NO. Is this going to reduce our central heating prices by even a penny? NO. Is it, once again, allowing the degradation of the planet so the transnational fossil fuel barons can get richer? YES. Hey. Burn'em is COMPLETELY different to Keith, though, isn't he? You mugs.
NEW: The Jackdaw gasfield will be given the go-ahead on Wednesday, signalling Andy Burnham’s commitment to the North Sea fossil fuel industry and threatening to trigger a row with climate campaigners and Labour MPs. Story by @kiranstacey theguardian.com/environment/…
