Dewey should have died in Scream 4. It would have been a perfect full circle moment for him, would have elevated Jill’s stature as a Ghostface & given Gale & Sidney ample narrative to work with in the original planned trilogy had the series continued back in 2011.
Scream 5 capitalized on the failures of its predecessor by giving Dewey a story that made narrative sense. He was the retired Old West gunslinger who had lost it all in the name of fighting the good fight. He gave the next generation everything they needed to pick up where he left off & then went down in a blaze of glory (that deliberately avoided fan service). It was exceptionally good writing that honored the character & paved the way for the story to continue.
