If you were confused about the latest updates in the Brooklyn Democratic Party power struggle saga, fear not. I have drawn an insane diagram that somewhat corresponds to 13 bulletpoints on the issue, to help us all understand: hellgatenyc.com/13-cursed-ne…

In a new ruling, a Supreme Court judge says Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn's term as leader of Brooklyn Dems ended at the conclusion of last week's organizational county committee meeting. As the leadership vote has yet to be held, Rep. Nydia Velázquez is the lone authority.

Darializa Avila Chevalier’s victory in June was more than a generational shift in Uptown politics - she also interrupted the planned succession of one of the members of “Squadriano” to represent NY-13. News & Opinion editor @petersterne breaks down what that means for the group of mostly Dominican American elected officials that Espaillat has helped shepherd over the years.

This decision is good news for the New Kings Democrats, but will prob. be appealed by Bichotte Hermelyn's faction. The NY Second Appellate Division will prob. also want to decide whether to hear any appeal before the party's organizing meeting which must be held before Oct 6.

The use of Signal is clear violation of city rules, and @nycmayor’s team is ignoring questions about it. This specific office falls under @anna_bahr Officials usually Signal for government work isn’t new (share.google/XEnK34MnDM7WVP1…) but using for official group lists is

While looking at the state travel reimbursements New York legislators get, my colleague @biancapallaro and I started noticing a trend: some were also simultaneously reporting lots of travel expenses on their campaign disclosures. 1/ nytimes.com/2026/08/21/nyreg…

For @jacobin, I spoke with @DavidMoralesPVD about his campaign for Mayor of Providence, why rent stabilization has become central to the race, and what his victory — without the explicit backing of his local DSA chapter — means for democratic socialism in New England.
Socialist Providence, Rhode Island, mayoral candidate @DavidMoralesPVD on rent stabilization: “It’s the government’s responsibility to intervene and protect our neighbors when they are victims of price gouging.” jacobin.com/2026/08/morales-…

According to @OsseChi, 25 City Council Members have signed onto his CURB Act, which would end the deployment of the NYPD's Strategic Response Group at protests. 19 members of the Progressive Caucus support the 2026 bill. 1 of the 4 missing, CM Krishnan, supported it in 2025.
Today, the Progressive Caucus released its 2026 Legislative Agenda, and my bill, the CURB Act, is on it. Twenty-five Council Members, @JumaaneWilliams, and Brooklyn Borough President @BKBPReynoso have signed on to the CURB Act.  Our First Amendment right to protest is fundamental to preserving our democracy, and no New Yorker should be met with riot gear and batons for exercising it.  For years, the NYPD's Strategic Response Group has wrought brutality upon non violent protest, and it's time we rein it in. Call your Council Member and tell them to bring the CURB Act to a hearing.

Really fascinating story about the cultural and political implications of NYC's "Middle Eastern" dining scene. Like the rest of the NYmag package, it does a really admirable job of presenting Arab, especially Palestinian, New Yorkers as protagonists in their own story.
From Huda to Eyval to Diljan Bakery, the Middle Eastern restaurant scene in New York has never been bigger, better, or more politically fraught. grubstreet.com/article/middl…
