People are saying there can't be water shortages when it's been raining for the last few days in Suffolk...here's two pics taken at our meadow today. Full rainwater tanks, but only the tiniest puddle at the bottom of our chalk groundwater fed pond. Aquifers still not recovered 🤷

This. Who are they going to blame when they’re the only ones who don’t have light or food in the El Niño winter coming?
How can you look at what has gone on in the last few years & then question why it might be good to have a little food and water for emergency’s? I’ve always done this. I also have candles, matches & as we camp, a stove. Go ahead, refuse to do it because the government said so 🤣

Keep finding I am suddenly blocked by other Environmental focussed accounts that I have not to my knowledge engaged with and entirely agree with so am unlikely to have upset! It does mean I can’t amplify their voices by likes or retweets though…this seems very suspicious!

Boom! Three GB grid regions recorded zero-rated days together for the first time ever this month, according to NESO’s regional carbon-intensity data. ⚡️ North Scotland, South Scotland and North East England all recorded daily averages rounding to zero on 9, 10 and 13 October. For the North East, 9 October was its first recorded zero-rated day ever, followed by another on the 10th and a third on the 13th. On the 9th, every individual half-hour also reported zero. These are modelled figures, so the precise zero deserves a pinch of salt. But it’s an encouraging milestone. As more renewables are installed and the Eastern Green Links bring more clean electricity from Scotland into England, more regions should be able to reach very low carbon intensity more often. More clean generation, and the grid to share it. Source and live regional map: carbonintensity.org.uk/ #RenewableEnergy #CleanEnergy #NorthEast #Wind #NetZero #Climate #AirPollution #Health

The lowest point of land in Britain is a cast-iron post in a Cambridgeshire wood, and when it went in the ground it was level with the ground. Stand next to it now and it is four metres over your head. It is at Holme Fen, south of Peterborough, and in 1851 this was the edge of Whittlesey Mere, the largest lake in southern England. A syndicate of landowners drained the lake that year for farmland, and the engineer, who knew what happens to peat when you take the water out of it, drove an oak pile through 22 feet of it down to the clay and cut the top flush with the turf. A column from the Crystal Palace replaced it. Then they stood back and watched the land go down. Nine inches in the first year. Eight feet by the 1890s. Today the ground around that post is 2.75 metres below sea level, and the post is a ruler nobody asked for, sticking out of a birch wood with guy ropes holding it up because the soil that used to hold it up has gone into the sky. That is what drained peat does. It dries, it shrinks, and it oxidises, which means it turns into carbon dioxide and leaves. Peat takes a thousand years to lay down a metre. Under the plough it loses a centimetre or two of that every year, and the Fens have been under the plough since the Dutch engineers arrived in the 1600s. Peat soils farmed for crops are among the largest sources of carbon dioxide in Britain's whole land sector, and the fields doing it are growing lettuce. Because that is what the Fens are for. A third of England's vegetables come out of this one flat black square: half the lettuce grown in Britain, three quarters of the celery, the carrots, the onions, the potatoes, the leeks, the beetroot. The bag of salad, the celery sticks, the chips. Every field of it is a few millimetres lower than it was last January, the pumps run day and night to keep the sea out of a landscape that is now beneath it, and the water the crops need is forecast to run short within ten years. Before the drain this was eels, wildfowl, reeds, summer grazing, and a fen that had been quietly stacking carbon since the ice left. The cattle came and went on it for 5,000 years and the ground stayed where it was. The salad has been on it for 170 years and the ground is four metres down. The post is still measuring.

World-leading cardiac surgeon Asif Hasan was surrounded by the children who received the gift of life thanks to his unerring skills at the emotional climax of another memorable Pride of Britain ceremony. 🥹 Now 70 years old, Mr Hasan has just retired after 35 years of service at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, but just after receiving his Lifetime Achievement Award, he had an extra special surprise: a cast of patients who would not be alive without him. ❤️

On a beach in West Africa the fishermen now haul in more clothes than fish, and the clothes have your charity shop's label on them. The beach is in Accra, the capital of Ghana. A mile inland is Kantamanto, the biggest second-hand clothes market on earth. Every week about 15 million garments arrive there in bales, from Britain, Canada, China and America. Most of what you drop in a clothing bank ends up on its way to a place like this. The locals have a name for the trade. Obroni Wawu. It means dead white man's clothes, because nobody could imagine a living person giving away so much. The traders open the bales and sort them. 40 years ago nearly everything sold. Now about 40% of every bale is rubbish before it leaves the market, because the garments were built to be worn 5 times. That is 6 million pieces of clothing a week with nowhere to go. The city collects what it can. The rest goes into the gutters, the lagoon and the sea. Then it comes back. The waves roll the clothes together into ropes of knotted polyester as long as a boat, and the beach monitors who count them have a word for those too. Tentacles. They logged 2,344 of them along 4 miles of shore in one year. Fishermen's nets come up full of trousers. Propellers foul on them. Men have had their canoes capsized by somebody's old leggings. A fishing community cannot fish, because of what the rest of the world was too virtuous to throw in its own bin. When those clothes were wool and cotton they would have rotted on that beach in a season. Instead they are becoming the coastline.

I see the protests in France are trending. Since I just spent 10 days there during the heart of them, I figured I'd chime in with what's actually going on. The news and clickbait accounts on X will show you the outlier events: burning buildings, raging violence and everything that triggers you. I was in the heart of Aix en Provence during the biggest protest day and filmed the center where it was happening. (See below) This is right the University, across from the church, dead center of town. The students are dancing, singing, kicking soccer balls and have comically barricaded the entrance doors to force the school to close. I visited many cities in France during the protest period, and saw zero violence or malpractice of any kind. More broadly, I spent more than a month this year in France across 3 trips and 10+ cities, including Paris, Bordeaux, Aix en Provence, Nice, Antibes, Biarritz, and others, and it's incredibly safe, charming, peaceful and beautiful. Every city I visited is nicer than almost every American city, and there's zero comparison. So much that it wouldn't even be insulting to France to try, because nobody who has spent significant time in both countries would take this comparison seriously. I spoke with the students at length about their views. I also spoke with waiters, drivers, merchants, staff and whoever. They were all civil, well articulated and genuinely wanted to see change. We can disagree about their reasoning, logic or whatever, and it's true that France has fiscal problems, but to chalk up the France protests to raging extremist violence from "pick your favorite group to blame", is a laughable misrepresentation of what's actually going on. If you exclusively watch the news and believe the top 1% extreme situations, you have likely been psyoped.

I follow this guy on Insta because it amuses me that he dresses up as a G.O.T nights watchman & tries to persuade random passers by to come on a side quest with him…this awesome woman turned the tables on him & he ran with it in the BEST way 😆
Hey man you never know what’s happening in other cities but Tiktok is here to save us and let us know

Moving tbh. This guy still just about standing strong while Trump abandons him & his country & sucks up to Putin. Its a grim grim situation for Ukraine.
