The first time I went to Florence was to see Dale Jr. race in 2024.
The crowd was packed in the stands like sardines to watch some great racing, which we got. At the time, it was impossible to think that this track’s future would ever come into question.
Hate to see it. 😞
Florence Motor Speedway will not put out a schedule for the 2027 season with no current plans to race next year.
From a social media post the track made:
“Since taking over the reigns in 2020, we have tried everything in our power to keep soldiering on, but each season has been increasingly difficult.”

We had a great conversation with Mark Martin about his advocacy for the fans, details behind the revival of the Chase and what he thinks now.
We also chatted a bit about his new book and potential future racing aspirations.

With NASCAR returning to Phoenix this weekend nearly a year after the 2025 Championship Race, it feels like the right time to reflect on where the sport was then and where it stands today.
The return of The Chase has been a breath of fresh air, I believe a necessary change after the "downfall" of the playoff format we had. It's revitalized the heart of what the sport is and has redefined what it takes to win a championship: consistency through an entire season.
So the change in the format is something I reflect on. Additionally, I can’t help but think back to how last year’s championship race ended. Whether you were a Denny Hamlin fan or not, you felt something. Numb? Frustrated? Gutted? Maybe it was none of those emotions if Hamlin isn't your guy. But it was hard to walk away from that race without feeling something. How it all played out didn't sit right with many.
Phoenix became a turning point for the industry. The emotions were raw, the reactions were strong, and the calls for change were impossible to ignore.
Now, here we are, at the conclusion of the first season back with The Chase with a year of perspective and growth. It’s worth looking at how far the sport has come in this year, what has changed, the listening that's happened, and the direction NASCAR is moving in.
Innovation is always done by trial and error, and NASCAR won't always get it right. Neither will we, after all, we are all human.
All this to say, it's been exciting to see the sport take positive steps forward after last season.
Absolutely gutted for Denny Hamlin. Dominated the race and put together a championship-caliber drive. The race had the feeling of a DH championship… it just wasn’t meant to be.
Also hate this is the first time we raced with this tire at Phoenix in a championship race.
That said, after a full weekend of racing, I am very excited to see this format go. Its intentions were good but became flawed very quickly. Hoping the sanctioning body has a format in mind that will reward consistency, wins, and NOT just winning at the right time.
This also said, for the NASCAR Cup Series, we couldn’t have asked for a more competitive Championship 4 in this format. All four drivers led in stats this season and the driver who earned the most points this season ultimately won the title.
Kiddos to Kyle Larson and the entire No. 5 team on championship #2 and their non-stop drive this season. Larson and Cliff Daniels will truly be one of the greatest driver-crew chief pairings in this sports history.
