arxiv.org/pdf/2609.10487 GPT-5.6 Sol disproves Rockafellar’s conjecture on the maximal monotonicity of the sum of two maximal monotone operators in nonreflexive Banach spaces.
Building on this construction, we present a simpler maximally monotone operator whose domain can have a nonconvex norm closure. This yields that the operator is not of type (FPV), which in turn provides a counterexample to Rockafellar’s sum conjecture. arxiv.org/abs/2609.13906

Yuri Nesterov is a foundational figure in optimization, best known for Nesterov's accelerated gradient descent (1983). This "momentum" method dramatically speeds up convergence, making it a cornerstone of modern machine learning. He also co-developed the theory of interior-point methods and self-concordant functions, which revolutionized convex optimization. His "smoothing technique" provided a way to efficiently solve non-smooth problems, solidifying his massive impact on AI, operations research, and control theory.
