#WATCH | Kolkata: On the Maintenance of Public Order Amendment Bill and the Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill to be tabled in Assembly, BJP MLA Rajesh Kumar says, “…this is a very progressive step taken by our government…the people of Bengal have long awaited a move to curb the rule of hooligans. There was a prevalence of 'syndicate raj' and extortion; goons and miscreants would incite riots, damage property, and flee without facing any consequences…the Maintenance of Public Order Amendment Bill now defines such acts of mischief…I would like to point out that these anti-social elements were not merely enemies, they were instruments of power. The govt operated through them, and consequently, no action could be taken against them. The previous government demoralized our police officers in this regard…under the previous government, any police officer who took action against these goons would be transferred by evening, while those who refrained from acting were rewarded…over the last 15 years, the police's morale was completely shattered…guidelines specify that this applies to individuals who have been charge sheeted or convicted under the Arms Act, the Explosive Substances Act, the NDPS Act, or the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita…the police are taking the right action... if the need arises, the repercussions must reach the highest levels of the TMC.”
