Putin knows exactly what he’s doing.
While Kushner and Witkoff are trying to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin is dangling lucrative business opportunities in front of them at the same time they are pushing for a deal more favorable to Russia.
And the people positioned to benefit from those opportunities just happen to have ties to the Trump family. Even Don Jr.’s college buddy is trying to get in on the action, pursuing a business deal with one of Russia’s largest energy companies.
All of this is happening while Trump pressures Ukraine to surrender territory that Putin seized by force.
Putin wants Russia back in the Western economy and people close to Trump are already looking at how to make money if that happens.
At some point, you have to ask: why does Putin keep getting more of what he wants from Trump while people in Trump’s orbit keep finding new ways to make money off of a closer relationship with Russia?
