Sad news in the world of broadcasting and play-by-play. Bob Ahrens passed away.
If you see his name trending today, it's because his selfless leadership and guidance at @wfuvsports for more than 2 decades helped shape the lives of hundreds of young men and women that patrolled the halls of WFUV as members of the Sports Department.
Many of these folks are well-known names & voices both in and out of sportscasting around NYC and beyond:
Ryan Ruocco
Tony Reali
Spero Dedes
Emmanuel Berbari
Dan D'Uva
Andrew Bogusch
Justin Shackil
Mike Watts
Mike Yam
Tom Winter
Connell McShane
Those are just a few. For each one of the names listed above, there are many others in the broadcasting business, both on and off the air, and today the tributes are pouring out with a little bit of sadness but a whole lot of love.
My time at WFUV preceded Bob's. He started in 1997, a couple of years after I graduated, but I was able to know Bob thanks to the many interns he helped send my way at various broadcasting stops, and they were all excellent young men & women who worked hard, were very professional, and always prepared. Spero Dedes was the first of many!
He taught from the Marty Glickman PxP playbook, so for all of those that didn't learn from Marty directly, they still benefitted from many of the words of wisdom that we were taught.
Even more so, Bob was a fierce advocate for his students, and as a result, the scope of the opportunities provided at WFUV far exceeded what we learned. Some of those opportunities included:
Full season media credentials at ALL of the NYC area pro sports teams. Good luck finding post-game scrum footage WITHOUT a WFUV microphone flag.
Annual trips to Cooperstown for the MLB Hall-of-Fame player induction ceremonies.
Super Bowl radio row access.
Media access at all of the pro drafts that afforded media access.
Feature programming that included interviews with legends such as Vin Scully
Bob had to fight for much of that access. He also wasn't just a mentor, he was a father/grandfather figure, who remained connected with them long after they graduated.
I personally saw their love for Bob about a decade ago, when the station celebrated One-on-One's 40th anniversary at the Pine Tavern restaurant in the Bronx. Bob was also celebrated as part of the event with various in-person and video tributes.
If you have any time today, seek out the various tributes and stories celebrating Bob Ahrens today online. A true legend in the industry.

It's been a bit of a week. Got news this morning that Bob Ahrens, who had shaped so many young media careers at @wfuvsports, passed after a long illness and an amazing life . While I had my back and forths with him over the years on various topics, he was an unceasing advocate for the young people on the Fordham staff, many of whom would not be where they are today without him.

The world lost an incredible man this morning.
Bob Ahrens was an advertising producer turned broadcasting mentor, the son of a coat maker from Brooklyn.
89 years lived uniquely and with unceasing dedication and humor. A lifelong blessing to have known him and learned from him.

RIP to an absolute legend Bob Ahrens. He ran @wfuvsports sports for years, helped launched so many careers across sports media, and was an amazing guy. He gave me some life changing opportunities and if it wasnāt for him I never wouldāve learned to broadcast those March Madness games and Iād still be stuck as Alarmingly Stupid. You canāt tell the story of Fordham without mentioning Bob

Bob Ahrens changed my life and countless others @wfuvsports forever. We wouldnāt be close the people we are without him.
Countless late nights in his office & over the phone, Bob gave his entire self to the betterment of his students, who eventually became cherished friends. Giving *all* of yourself to others. How rare is that?!
Bob pushed you to be yourself, treat others with kindness/respect, and say it ālike Sinatra would.ā
In his broadcast/life lessons, he embodied that itās how you make people feel.
And itās why Bob can say, as his spirit and lessons live forever, āThe Record shows I took the blows ⦠And did it My Way.ā
Rest in peace, Bob ā¤ļø Let me put it this way: YOU did everyone proud.

Dem Approps Chair Vincent Hughes indicated the $565 million adequacy funding for public schools is agreed to as part of a budget deal:

Update from @GovernorShapiro on the budget:
I introduced my budget 147 days ago. The House passed theirs 77 days ago, the Senate has only come to work 24 days. And on the day they should be sending a budget to my desk, they decided to go home on vacation. I think it's disrespectful to the people of Pennsylvania.
They [Senate Republicans] should be here and they should be working. We should work through this and finish the job together, and instead, they ran away.

Statement from Sen. Fettermanās Spokesperson:
āDuring an early morning walk, Senator Fetterman sustained a fall near his home in Braddock.
Out of an abundance of caution, he was transported to a hospital in Pittsburgh.
Upon evaluation, it was established he had a ventricular fibrillation flare-up that led to Senator Fetterman feeling light-headed, falling to the ground and hitting his face with minor injuries.
Senator Fetterman had this to say: āIf you thought my face looked bad before, wait until you see it now!ā
He is doing well and receiving routine observation at the hospital. He has opted to stay so doctors can fine-tune his medication regimen.
Senator Fetterman is grateful for the EMTs, doctors, and nurses who are providing his care.ā

There is no place for this type of political violence in our country ā and it has to stop.
This violence is leaving scars on all of us, whether theyāre physical or emotional. I can attest to that.
We need words of healing right now. Not words of vengeance. This moment demands moral clarity and calls for healing, peace, and prayer. Thatās what we need right now.
