WHAT’S GOING WRONG AT BATH RUGBY? 🔵⚫️⚪️ Three defeats does not equal a crisis, but we’ve been stuttering for some time now. A thread with some thoughts 🧵👇

A few thoughts on where we’re going wrong: 💪 It’s obvious that our over-reliance on the pick-and-go game is too predictable. But I don’t think that’s an issue in itself - it wasn’t a problem two years ago, just as it wasn’t a problem for Exeter when they were winning titles with an incredibly predictable gameplan. The issue is more in execution. It can still be our plan A if we do it better. That means relying less on winning the arm wrestle with a one-man carrier and instead (i) quicker ruck speed to stop defences setting (ii) more deception about who is carrying (iii) better technique, both in carrying lower and finishing. Our main issue is not what we’re doing nor that people can predict it - it’s how we’re executing it 🏃🏻 When we do go wide, it’s often a phase or two late and we don’t look properly set up. Using our 12 as first receiver to carry or go out the back to Finn (which has been very fruitful the last couple of years) ties in both centres as 13 runs the dummy line, so when we go out the back we only have 2/3 options. We also generally don’t take out multiple defenders with long passes across the face. All that makes it easier for defences to drift on us and thus we don’t create overlaps or isolate defenders in wide channels. It’s all compounded by the fact our catch-pass skills are simply not good enough to compete with the likes of Northampton, Bordeaux or Toulouse 🥊 We’re losing the breakdown battle on both sides of the ball. We’re not getting there quick enough to protect our own possession, and it’s not clear what our strategy is defensively: against Montpellier we didn’t compete, and then we did more against Gloucester but our technique was poor (we were rightly pinged multiple times for hands on the floor or not releasing) 🔁 Our rotation strategy served us very well in the treble season, but I wonder if it’s now hurting us. Not only are we not building connections, it means selection is not fully linked to performance. Form players get planned rest and bad performances don’t come with the same consequences if selection is dictated by sharing game time. Maybe Dunn/Stuart/Big Joe’s omissions on Friday were a sign that that is changing. But despite our deep squad we don’t really have players competing for spots, which drives standards 🪫 Relatedly, we seem to be lacking the desire we once had. This is NOT saying the players aren’t trying hard enough - there’s no doubt that they care hugely. But are we fighting on our own line like Gloucester and Leicester did this weekend? Why are subs who’ve only just come on meandering back against Northampton? Are some of our missed tackles because we’re not fighting for every inch? I wonder if our selection policy means there’s a lack of consequences for less than 100% desire

We should absolutely trust that JvG can dig us out of this rut. This is a new challenge but we have built back from worse and we definitely have the coaches and players to turn it around (not all clubs can say that). But it does need to start with acknowledging that things aren’t right at the moment. But as always: keep the faith. The best is yet to come 💙🖤🤍

Christophe Ridley is making a habit of not bothering to check the footage when Kepu Tuipulotu seems to have scored… (It’s our fault we lost both games but still frustrating)

Tackle success of 76% Opposition concede 20 penalties and 3 yellow card and yet... 16 entries into their 22 resulting in 5 whole points. 2 more frontline players crocked. Shocking stats. 🔵⚫️⚪️ The train has hit the buffers on a siding.

Most concerning thing is that you can make an argument that that’s our best 80 minute performance this season.

Important point 👇 second week in a row of ZERO second half points. Our super strength from two years ago has completely disappeared
Bath have been atrocious in second halves this season. That last 40 was shocking. Huge injury list, squad depth not what it was, new attack not yet clicking. If this keeps up, top 4 seems unlikely.

Enoch Opoku-Gyamfi is a very exciting prospect

GLOUCESTER 23 - 5 BATH Immensely frustrating. Full credit to Gloucester, they were immense. But we are in a hole. Painful lack of accuracy and execution of so, so many chances. Particularly worrying because we clearly still think pick-and-go is our strongest weapon and JvG/players said pre-match that being more clinical was our main focus tonight. Frustrating, because our physicality and control was at least better. Compounded by nasty looking injuries to Santi (these pitches 😤) and Pepper. Got to stick together, but there’s a lot of work to do 💙🖤🤍

Hugely frustrating half and yet we’re only 4 points down and Glos will surely tire after that heroic defensive shift (combined with their effort last week). Which bench adds more energy will decide this #GLOvBAT

Tonight’s game could be a real indicator of whether we’re stuttering as we evolve but are still fundamentally strong, or whether the cracks run deeper. Could be quite revealing #COYB

Really like the look of this - delighted to see Hennessey back and Offiah has earned this debut. Bit worried no Stu and Dunn against a now big Glos pack. Reid and Pepper need to have big games to slow the Glos ball down. Huge game for Lawrence to get his form back.
𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦’𝐬 𝐮𝐩 🔥 🍒 It's officially time for Derby Weekend. This Friday, we travel up to Kingsholm for another clash against our West Country rivals. Let's go 👊

🍒 team. No Dewi Lake or Seb Atkinson, who they’ll miss. But it’s a form side and the bench looks strong

🍒 GLOUCESTER (a) 💙 More rotation. Some notable omissions: Dunn, Stuart, Big Joe, Max, Roux (again). May be planned rotation but the first three have been way off it - have they been dropped..? 🖤 Great to have Louie Hennessey back and Kepu/Griffin deserve their starts 🤍 Big tests for Enoch O-G and Tyler Offiah All the momentum is with Gloucester. The cause for optimism is that we so often see reactions in rugby - we should be pumped up after last week while Gloucester have to go again after emptying the tank. But they’ll fancy it. Massive game #COYB
