What if you paid ₦5,000 for a food product but received only ₦4,000 worth of genuine content? Your money hasn’t just lost purchasing power through inflation. You’ve paid for something you didn’t actually receive. And that’s another financial problem facing Nigerian households. A new BusinessDay investigation published on October 26 examines how Nigerians are increasingly trying to identify adulterated food themselves. Palm oil, honey, beans and other everyday products are at the centre of growing consumer concerns. Some shoppers now rely on WhatsApp groups, TikTok videos and homemade tests to decide which products are genuine. But there’s an economic dimension to this story that deserves more attention. Let’s do a simple calculation. Imagine buying one litre of a food product for ₦5,000. If 20% of its contents were substituted with a cheaper ingredient, the product would contain only 800ml of what you intended to purchase. Your effective price per litre of genuine content would become: ₦5,000 ÷ 0.8 = ₦6,250. That’s a 25% hidden price penalty. This is a hypothetical illustration, not a measured adulteration rate in Nigerian markets. And importantly, a contaminated product may be unsafe in its entirety. The calculation doesn’t mean the remaining 80% is safe to consume. Now consider what this means for household finances. Nigeria’s inflation statistics measure changes in consumer prices. But when product quality or genuine content deteriorates, the economic value households receive can fall even without a visible price increase. A family may believe its food budget has remained unchanged while receiving less genuine value for the same money. There’s another cost: trust. Consumers may spend more time searching for reliable sellers, travel farther to buy directly from farms or pay premiums for products they believe are traceable. These costs don’t disappear simply because headline inflation declines. So who’s responsible for protecting consumers? BusinessDay’s investigation highlights gaps in oversight between agencies responsible for agriculture, food processing and consumer protection. NAFDAC has acknowledged that it does not exercise direct and absolute oversight over every unbranded staple sold in open markets. But consumers shouldn’t have to become laboratory technicians just to buy cooking ingredients. There’s also a warning here. On October 23, Africa Check debunked a viral list falsely attributed to NAFDAC that labelled numerous products as counterfeit. Social media suspicion is not scientific verification. A product’s colour, appearance or behaviour in a homemade test cannot reliably establish whether it contains dangerous contaminants. My read? Food affordability and food safety should be treated as connected economic priorities. Nigeria needs stronger market surveillance, clearer regulatory responsibilities, reliable product testing and traceability that consumers can actually trust. Because when food quality becomes uncertain, households face more than a health risk. They also face wasted spending, higher search costs and potentially expensive consequences. The real cost of food isn’t simply what Nigerians pay at the market. It’s what they genuinely receive, and whether it’s safe to consume. Have you ever stopped buying a particular food product because you no longer trusted its quality?
Food prices fell in 25 Nigerian states and the FCT in September. Yet Lagos households are facing food inflation of 34.4%. How can both be true? And why are Nigerians experiencing such different realities when shopping for food? A new report published today, based on the NBS September inflation figures, reveals something worth examining. Annual food inflation: • Lagos: +34.40% • Imo: +33.79% • Ondo: +31.49% • Taraba: -7.47% • Yobe: -0.37% National food inflation stood at 19.59%. But here’s the interesting part. Food prices actually declined month-on-month in 25 of Nigeria’s 37 reporting locations, including the FCT. Meanwhile, 16 states still recorded annual food inflation above 20%. This is why falling inflation doesn’t necessarily mean households are recovering their purchasing power. Let’s put the numbers into perspective. Suppose a Lagos household spent ₦50,000 on a particular food basket in September 2025. Applying Lagos’ 34.4% annual food inflation rate, that same representative basket would cost approximately: ₦67,200 in September 2026. That’s an additional ₦17,200. To appreciate the scale, that increase alone represents approximately 24.6% of Nigeria’s ₦70,000 national minimum wage. This is an illustrative inflation-adjusted basket, not a surveyed household bill. Now consider Taraba. Its annual food inflation was negative. That means its locally measured food basket became cheaper over the same twelve-month period. But there’s an important distinction. Lower inflation doesn’t automatically mean a state has a lower cost of living. Consumption patterns and statistical weights differ across states, so these figures cannot directly establish where groceries are cheapest. Now, why is the regional gap so significant? The President of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria has pointed to transportation costs. And I think this deserves serious attention. Nigeria can produce substantial quantities of food in agricultural regions, yet consumers hundreds of kilometres away may face much higher costs. Moving food requires fuel, vehicles, reliable roads, storage and distribution networks. When those costs increase, the benefits of improved harvests may not fully reach urban consumers. This also creates a difficult situation for farmers. Consumers may pay high prices while producers receive a much smaller share of the final retail price. Of course, transport costs alone cannot explain every regional price difference. Supply conditions, insecurity, demand and local market structures also matter. My read? Nigeria’s food inflation problem isn’t simply about producing more food. It’s also about moving that food efficiently and affordably to where people need it. Better harvests are encouraging. But sustainable food affordability requires improvements in logistics, storage, market access and distribution costs. And policymakers should be measuring whether those improvements actually reach household budgets. Because food becoming cheaper at the farm doesn’t automatically mean food becomes affordable at the market. That’s the gap Nigeria needs to close.

The whole of their compound was dark, as I was walking towards the gate, i heard someone on a call from the balcony upstairs. So I stood there to listen to that conversation. She was telling the person that after her daughter wrote her waec last year that she got pregnant, but she terminated it. Then this year that after her jamb she found out she was pregnant again she removed it. That she had to take her to the hospital to do family planning for her.

At my sister's wedding, a man I'd never met asked me to dance. Halfway through the song, he whispered, “Please pretend you're in love with me. My ex is watching.” I laughed. “What's in it for me?” “Dinner. Anywhere you want.” “Make it two dinners.” He smiled. “Done.” His name was Julian. He was handsome, charming, and held me as though we had known each other for years. When the song ended, he didn't release my hand. Instead, he looked into my eyes and said, “Thank you. I think you just saved my evening.” I shrugged. “Happy to help.” But as I turned to leave, he gently pulled me back. “One more dance?” I should have said no. Instead, I stayed. We danced until the music changed, laughing and talking as though the entire wedding had disappeared around us. At the end of the night, he asked for my number. I gave it to him. Three days later, he took me to dinner. Then another dinner. Then a movie. Soon, Julian became the first person I wanted to tell whenever something good happened. I was falling in love. And for the first time in years, I wasn't afraid. Until one evening, he invited me to his house. As I entered, I noticed a framed photograph on the wall. It was Julian with a beautiful woman, their arms wrapped around each other. I pointed at it. “Who's she?” His expression changed. “My ex.” I nodded slowly. “Are you still in love with her?” He was silent for so long that I wished I hadn't asked. Then he took my hands. “There's something I should have told you before we started dating.” My heart began to race. “What?” He looked directly into my eyes. “The woman you helped me make jealous at that wedding wasn't my ex.” I frowned. “Then who was she?” He swallowed hard. “My fiancée. We were supposed to get married that very weekend.” I pulled my hands away. “Julian, what have you done?” He reached for me, but I stepped back. Then he said the one thing I never expected. “I didn't ask you to dance because I wanted to make her jealous. I asked because I had seen you before, and I was hoping you'd finally notice me.”

Congratulations to me, it’s time to share this part of my journey.❤️ I started my nursing school journey recently. Honestly, it’s been overwhelming trying to balance school, motherhood, and my businesses, both online and offline. I thought about whether I should start now or wait, but eventually, I took the leap cos deep down i knew i did not want to keep delaying it. A big shout-out to @milkyice23, @BlessingUjay, and @Millyivie. Thank you for your words of encouragement and reminding me that I can do this, even when I doubted myself a little. I am wearing so many hats right now, and honestly, I don’t know how I’ll juggle everything. I just pray for strength, grace, and the ability to keep showing up. There will be days when I come here to cry, rant, or complain. Please encourage me with kind words. I want you to be part of this journey, so that when I finally graduate, we can look back and say, “Wow, I remember when you started!” 🥹 Yes, time flies! And by God’s grace, i will get there. So this is me, starting another chapter, putting in the work, trusting God, and believing that it will all end in praise.🙏🏽 Please say a word of pray or drop a word of encouragement for me whenever you see this post. PS: First video is today and second was my first day in school. BTW What do you think of my new X banner?
