Hmm. Hard to address affordability of healthcare without addressing this. #txlege

As a young conservative staffer, I’ve always thought of progressive staffers as honorable opponents in the war of ideas, messaging, and political strategy. I’m learning they do not think of us the same way.

NEW: @GinaHinojosaTX denies she voted in 2019 against the constitutional amendment to ban a state income tax in Texas. That contradicts legislative records.

Hinojosa and Talarico both voted to keep a Texas income tax on the table. Abbott fought for and won a constitutional ban on income taxes.
Thankful that there are at least a couple of journalists that will call out Hinojosa on this.

Given how many ways traditional insurance hides rebates/kickbacks from employers, many employers are currently failing their fiduciary responsibility to their employees.
Ignorance is not a great excuse for letting your employees get ripped off.
#txlege #ContractualTerrorism
If you run a company, you now have a fiduciary/legal responsibility to make sure your healthcare benefits actually benefit your employees.
If not , you are legally liable.
You have to learn how it all works. You can’t ask a broker or consultant to figure it out for you. The responsibility stays with you and never goes to them. Even if they lie, steal and cheat you.
It’s all on you.

The House Select Committee on Governmental Oversight had a long and productive day yesterday, examining issues critical to local accountability, including the responsible use of Texans’ taxpayer money and prosecutorial integrity, as well as exploring the implications of adding certain New Mexico counties to Texas.
Thank you to Chairman @cvasut and members of the committee for their commitment to ensuring affordability and public safety for Texans. I’m grateful to everyone who took the time to share their experiences, perspectives and expertise with the committee.

Healthcare prices at least 2x what a rational market would cost.
Not controversial to fix, just a bunch of money arrayed against solutions.

Replying to @JTLonsdale
What are your best ideas?
What’s broken that we could fix if smart people confronted it, but everybody is afraid that it’s too controversial?
These are great areas to consider for philanthropy or for-profit work!
Julia - It was a true pleasure working with you. Talented, smart, hard-working and mature beyond your years. Throw in the fact that your priorities are His priorities and you have the full package.
Thanks for your hard work and leadership in our office. #txlege
Special thanks to my wonderful (now former) boss @RepJamesFrank, whom it was such a privilege to work for. And thank you to @mayes_middleton and @chiproytx, who gave me my first opportunities in politics. I genuinely could not have asked for better members to work for!
There is more proof that Jesus existed than almost any other historical figure. Even secular historians don’t make this ignorant argument.
You don’t have to believe he is God (which clearly Talarico’s pastor doesn’t), but to say we don’t know whether Jesus existed - SMH

The Texas Legislature has increased property tax exemptions for families and small businesses, but when local governments turn around and hike taxes to pay for non-essential expenditures, it undermines the progress we've made. And Texans are left with the burden.
On September 30, the House Select Committee on Governmental Oversight will take a close look at the misuse of taxpayer money at the local level and discuss ways to strengthen oversight, promote local fiscal responsibility and better protect Texans’ pocketbooks. #txlege
While everyone is focused on the ICE shooting in Austin, the City Council is quietly spending an insane amount of taxpayer money on lawyers to fight deportations.
It's tucked into Thursday's consent agenda so it can pass without a word of debate or controversy.
The money goes to two nonprofits, American Gateways and Catholic Charities, to provide what the City's own documents call "deportation defense."
It pays for:
1. Lawyers representing "detained and non-detained immigrants," including people ICE is actively trying to remove.
2. Coaching immigrants representing themselves in immigration court, helping them file motions and meet deadlines to stay in the country.
3. Legal work that helps immigrants obtain work permits.
4. Federal immigration filing fees.
Total bill to be approved: $854,872
City staff list one of the program's goals as helping clients "obtain and maintain public benefits."
Austin has already paid American Gateways $3.4 million since 2019, and after Thursday the four contracts will be authorized for up to $6.7 million.

The State of Texas is stepping up where some local prosecutors are failing to protect the public.
For too long, Texans in certain communities have faced the dangerous consequences of prosecutorial decisions that put repeat offenders back on our streets.
Enough is enough.
Today, I joined Governor @GregAbbott_TX and Lt. Gov. @DanPatrick in demanding greater accountability and oversight of local prosecutorial decision-making. When chronic repeat offenders go free and innocent Texans are killed, the public deserves answers.
Strengthening public safety at the local level will be a top priority for the 90th Legislative Session. The House’s work starts on September 30, when the Select Committee on Governmental Oversight will hold a public hearing to ask tough questions, follow the facts and identify solutions for next session.
I want to thank Governor Abbott, Lt. Gov. Patrick and our legislative colleagues for their continued focus on keeping Texans safe. #txlege

Direct contracting systems like DPC are the way of the future. And the future is here now. Lawmakers should do everything in their power to give these systems the space and level playing field to compete. We can save our healthcare system and lower costs. This is the way. @ALEC_states
Eighty-two percent of physicians now work for a hospital, an insurer, or private equity.
KFF Health News just walked through what that looks like for one patient: an office polyp removal became a surgery-center bill after the health system bought the practice. Estimate jumped from about $3,000 to about $6,000. The hospital’s first pitch was $18,000 with full anesthesia.
@mcuban called the vertical stack what it is: the right pocket giving to the left pocket.
Keep a policy for the wreck. Primary care shouldn’t live inside someone else’s supply chain. Flat monthly fee. No claim. No network. The number on the door is the number you pay.
