The new changes to drag forward income tax charges mean that many if not most people will be paying income tax on money they haven't earned yet. Very few business have 1/12 of their profit available to distribute in April. Even if it's quarterly, how many businesses have 1/4 of their annual profit in the bank by the end of June? If the Treasury knew anything about seasonality or billing cycles, they'd never have proposed this change.

Healey fails his own test… The Chancellor resigned as Defence Secretary because the cash Starmer offered would have left our country ‘less safe’. Instead, he demanded 3% by 2030. Now he’s Chancellor, the best he can offer is a plan to have a plan for 3%. NO cuts to welfare to pay for Defence. NO tough decisions today. John Healey’s manana budget.

This is…very confusing. The Prime Minister insists that no decision on Rosebank has been taken… But, the Office for Budget Responsibility have based their forecasts on, “estimates of the production from currently producing fields and the NSTAs estimate of production from development of new fields, which include ROSEBANK and from FUTURE DISCOVERIES.” So, is it approved or not? Serious questions to answer from the Energy Secretary!

🤔 The removal of standing charges on gas bills…sounds good doesn’t it? 💁‍♂️ On the face of it, yes, in general bills might be lower - but here’s the catch… 🤨 If you are a ‘higher consumer’ (meaning someone that uses gas for heating, cooking, hot water etc) then your energy bill is about to go UP. That’s cause they are putting the fixed daily cost on to the Unit Rate. 🥶Next week in large parts of the UK, the temperature is going to get close to freezing. Because of these changes, if you live there and heat your home with gas and want to turn on the central heating…Labour just made your life much more difficult and far more expensive.

“The final nail in the coffin came with the disappointing news that Ipswich has been passed over as the City of Culture. Despite the local MP being the Secretary of State’s Parliamentary Secretary, Ipswich still lost out to … Wrexham! Words desert me.” My pre-budget op-ed for the @EADT24 eadt.co.uk/news/26669992.suf…

A great team out in Needham Market today covering loads of ground with Kay Oakes, our wonderful candidate in the Bosmere Division by-election. Polling day is 12 November, Kay lives in the Division & is a long-standing community champion - it would be brilliant to have her back on Suffolk County Council.

How to hold a dissembling, obfuscating minister’s feet to the fire.
Energy Sec refuses to answer, multiple times, whether she backs the government's immigration proposal. 🗣️ @SophyRidgeSky asks - "Do you support plans for people to live in the UK for 15 years before they get permanent residency?"

Let me get this straight. Work all your life building a business. Sell that business to a rando - charged at 24%. Try to pass it on to your family - charged at 45%. Genuinely insane telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

A fantastic turnout to support Kay Oakes in Needham Market. Kay has been a community champion for decades, served as County Councillor there for 7 years and is now standing in the Bosmere Division by-election following the resignation of the Reform councillor after just 5 months.

Great to be out in Needham Market … campaigning for Kay Oakes to go back to Suffolk County Council. Roads, parking, GP services all raised on the doorstep. The @Conservatives team will continue to work for our residents.

Last week I called Andy Burnham's speech consequential, but it was very much full, as Ed Davey said, full of 'definitely maybes' by 2040. @KemiBadenoch delivered a belter of a speech today, full of sparkle, but also setting out basic Conservative principles and full of policy meat. The IHT promise will get the headlines but there was far more to it than that. The stuff about the Reform "weirdos" and ruling our reuniting the right should get attention, plus the passage on her ethnicity and what it means to be English, where she absolutely socked it to Suella Braverman without naming her. The passage on how to bring about growth was especially strong. I've been attending party conferences for 40 years. This one got off to a slow start, but ended with the party members going home with a spring in their step. Rarely, if ever, in those 40 years, have I seen a party so united behind its leader - both MPs and party members. And to achieve that within less than two years of becoming leader is quite an achievement. Yes, last year's conference speech was a turning point, but so was her firing of Robert Jenrick. With one decisive step, she ripped out the cancer, and has never looked back. It's now up to her shadow cabinet to demonstrate that this isn't a one woman party.
