Working class white boys highest group to drop out after GCSEs. This is a growing national crisis. Boys lag girls from nursery to university. They are more likely to be socially isolated – suspended from the classroom, excluded from school, and checked out of the workforce. Research even suggests that the much-vaunted gender pay gap has reversed for the younger generation, with young women outearning their young male peers. More gravely, young men make up almost the entirety of the prison youth estate and are twice as likely to take their own life than girls.  @csjthinktank thetimes.com/article/217d0c6…

Alpha School is following the Gartman Hype Cycle. Expectations peaked early 2026. Today, there is increasing skepticism. The important question is not where they are today but where they will be in a few years when they reach the Plateau of Productivity. I've been critical of @Alphaschool in the past for making bold claims but not offering transparency or allowing third-party evaluation. That opens them up to the criticism they're receiving now, like in today's NYT (some of which was unfair). I also think it's unclear how much internal motivation a student needs to succeed there. That said, I greatly applaud them and @jliemandt for experimenting with a radically new model. The current K-12 instructional model doesn't work very well and may be even worse in the future preparing kids for a world with AI. While the promise of ed tech has been a huge disappointment for 20+ years, that doesn't mean it always will be. AI probably isn't good enough to overcome the challenge of engagement with even the median student today. That very well might change in a few years. If so, we need education entrepreneurs building the products, tools, and school models to translate that technology into better student outcomes. Alpha is an important org in that effort. It's important we don't judge that effort prematurely, but they also need to be careful of the claims they make, particularly as they inch into public education.

Why does character formation matter for living wisely and well? @RichardVReeves and @christineemba took up that question with us, and we presented the 2026 Michael J. Gerson Memorial Prize to Brad East. Watch the conversation and Brad’s remarks at ttf.org or our YouTube Channel.

The U.S. faces a teacher shortage, but there’s a related problem that gets far less attention: teaching has become an overwhelmingly female profession, and the share of men in the classroom has been shrinking for decades.

“Demoralized men are not depressed in the clinical sense. They can still enjoy things, still function when motivated, still complete tasks that interest them. What they lack is a felt sense that effort connects to a future worth reaching.” New piece by Bruno Manno: aibm.org/commentary/why-cant…

I don’t think social media and gaming is inherently bad for young men, but I think it’s bad when it replaces the alternatives (i.e. sports, friendships, and other in-person events). Kim & @pennholderness, thanks for having me on the podcast to discuss this and much more: open.spotify.com/episode/6dD…

I wish people who embraced loopy crime ideas in 2019-2020 would issue groveling apologies to people who were right all along, but genuinely the most important thing about this is we have won the argument. slowboring.com/p/dont-get-co…

The poverty gap between children of married and unmarried mothers has narrowed from 20 points among those born in the 70s to 10 points among those born in the 90s. For kids of college-educated moms, the poverty gap between those with married and unmarried moms nearly disappeared (94% vs. 96% not poor). nber.org/papers/w35765?utm_s…

Young men are the new swing voters. And I think what was missing in the 2024 election was a real policy agenda for boys and men, one that doesn’t turn back the clock on women. Now, that lane is wide open, and women and men have to figure this out together.
