Creating a special tax allowance for low-paid pensioners risks adding yet another layer of complexity to an already complicated tax system. A clear, consistent PA would be simpler to administer, easier for taxpayers to understand and less likely to create arbitrary boundaries.
Yesterday was an expensive day for the UK electricity system. High winds forced wind turbines to shut down, while reliable gas-fired generators ramped up to meet demand. A reminder that installed wind capacity doesn't guarantee electricity when it's needed.

Natural Gas EU €96.24/MWh📈🔥
European natural gas prices climbed above €96/MWh on Monday, hitting a fresh 2022 high as escalating military conflict in the Middle East heightened concerns over gas supplies ahead of winter.

Strategic Land Acquisition
EnergyPathways #EPP has taken another important step towards the development of MESH, signing Heads of Terms to acquire strategically located land at Barrow-in-Furness.
The acquisition provides a critical piece of the infrastructure required to connect MESH to existing pipeline networks and establish a hydrogen and natural gas transportation corridor between Barrow and our offshore energy storage facilities in the East Irish Sea.
Importantly, the land:
· Enables MESH to tie back into existing pipeline infrastructure
· Supports connection to the National Gas Transmission system
· Provides optionality for the re-use of strategically important existing pipeline infrastructure
· Accelerates our hydrogen and graphite business to generate early revenues
· Advances another critical milestone on the pathway towards Final Investment Decision
This comes as UK energy policy increasingly recognises the importance of energy storage, domestic energy security and low-carbon infrastructure, including the recent announcements on Jackdaw, Transitional Energy Certificates, and the new £2 billion Energy Wealth Fund.
MESH is set to become the UK’s largest integrated energy storage facility, combining strategic gas and hydrogen storage with long-duration electricity storage (LDES), alongside hydrogen industries, graphite and ammonia.
We continue to rapidly advance MESH, securing the land, connections, and strategic assets needed to move the project toward delivery.

Reports suggest Chancellor John Healey has ruled out raising CGT in the 28 October Budget, amid concerns higher rates could deter investment, discourage asset sales and drive wealthy people abroad. It’s not yet a formal commitment, but investors will welcome the news.
If Labour wants the UK to rejoin the EU, it should say so explicitly in its 2029 General Election manifesto. Voters deserve a clear choice on such a major decision, rather than the government pursuing rejoining without a specific electoral mandate.
Worth knowing: if there’s a power cut in your area, your solar panels and home battery will usually stop supplying electricity, even if the sun is shining and your battery is charged. You need a system specifically designed with backup capability to keep your home powered.
HMRC wrote off or remitted £7.2bn in tax debt in 2024–25, with losses rising further in 2025–26. Taxpayers cannot afford billions in annual losses. Should HMRC be given greater priority in insolvencies to improve recovery of unpaid taxes?
In an increasingly uncertain world, some jobs really can be jobs for life. In Scotland’s public sector, a no-compulsory-redundancy policy means staff may be retrained and redeployed to new roles, remaining on full pay while awaiting a suitable position. Some have waited years.
You only fear what you don’t understand. Young people need to learn about AI and how to use it effectively. Some jobs will disappear, but others will emerge. Technology has always changed the world of work. The key is to adapt, learn and embrace the opportunities.
UK VCT rules have shifted the risk-reward equation. While the income tax relief cut from 30% to 20% dampens the upfront reward cushion, doubled investment thresholds (£30m gross assets / £24m funding) allow managers to back larger, more stable firms, structurally lowering risk.
Income investing is about more than collecting dividends. Reinvest them, let compounding do its work, then enjoy the growing income — more holidays, experiences and gifts for family.
Build the income. Enjoy the rewards. 💷📈

We import goods from countries like China, where c. 55% of electricity comes from coal. Should we judge our climate progress on what we produce, or the emissions embodied in what we consume?
Europe’s energy transition is creating new strategic dependencies. China supplies 98.6% of EU solar panel imports & 59.6% of wind turbine imports. Replacing dependence on imported fossil fuels with dependence on imported clean-energy technology is not necessarily energy security.
Post-Oct 27, #CAML's merger hurdles clear. Arbitrage shorts are likely to unwind, removing the technical pressure that slid the stock from 154p to ~135p. This opens the path for fundamentals to take over—driven by a massive ~11% dividend yield & rising base metal volumes.
