TODAY IT IS 15 YEARS SINCE WINTERBOURNE VIEW: WHY ARE THE NUMBERS STILL RISING? Today, May 31st, we mark the 15th anniversary of the Winterbourne View scandal. At the time, the world promised "never again." Yet, as someone who survived three years of detention in similar settings, Rightful Lives admin, Alexis Quinn, is here to tell you that for many, "never again" was a hollow promise. The data from 2026 is staggering: 🚨 A 152% increase in the detention of autistic people since 2015. 🚨 A "Stuck" Population: Those with learning disabilities are still being detained for 10, 15, or 20 years. 🚨 Ongoing Abuse: From Edenfield to St Andrew's and the horrors exposed in the Patient 11 podcast, the culture of locked wards remains broken. The Legislative Stalling Point: While the new Mental Health Act has received Royal Assent, the Government is hiding behind a "switch on" clause. They refuse to enact these life-saving changes until "sufficient" community support is in place—yet they have provided no roadmap, no funding, and no definition of what "sufficient" actually looks like. The Risk of Inaction: Without a community roadmap, we aren't "transforming care"; we are just shifting the trauma. We are seeing a rise in "trans-institutionalisation," where autistic people are pushed into forensic pathways, the criminal justice system, or left homeless in unregulated, restrictive settings. It is too much to ask for a home, not a hospital? At Rightful Lives, we are demanding an urgent, funded roadmap for community support. No more "learning lessons." We need action. Watch our video to hear why we cannot wait any longer. #Winterbourne15 #RightfulLives #MentalHealthReform #AutismAdvocacy #HomesNotHospitals #Patient11 #HumanRights

Yesterday we put out a statement about lack of action from regulators on Oxevision. We quote from Hat Porter's evidence to the Lampard Inquiry last year. It should not take patients coming to harm for action to be taken and it should not be up to us as disabled people to do this

On my way in to the "office" . Today includes 2nd reading of the Health Bill. Another useless NHS reorganisation...that will contribute diddly squat to improving health outcomes

NHS risking ‘system failures’ as need for ADHD and autism care soars, inquiry finds. It says the NHS should combine mental health and neurodevelopmental services, moving to a “needs-led” system. Overdiagnosis was not found to be occurring at scale theguardian.com/society/2026…

And definitely stop sticking people in long term segregation.
President Prof Subodh Dave responds to the Independent Review into mental health conditions, ADHD & autism in England: “Millions of people have had their lives turned upside down by poor mental health, including illnesses and neurodevelopmental conditions that are often severe, disabling and overlapping. We must reduce unacceptably long waiting lists for high-quality assessments and improve access to specialist treatments.” Read more: shorturl.at/B16vK

In last2Days I had to relieve the psychological trauma the mental mechanical verbal physical chemical abuse my son endured at the hands of private mental health care workers at the So called ATUs. Assessment treatment units. I did not sleep all night last night because of it all was going on in my brain 🧠 the constant brain activity of memory’s that was the horrible torment my son went through and more then that , that can’t talk about. I thought I was able to talk through what happened to my son Stephen without crying and the feeling of helplessness but it turns out it’s as vivid as it was . How can we move forwards? How can I move forward how can my beautiful son move forward with what those people did to him? He can’t. Because if it’s hard for me whereby I can be vocal about it and I can’t forget how are my boy to do it if he can’t understand what happened to him? How can any of us who’s sons and daughters were put in those godforsaken mental hospitals move forward? How do we do it? Who’s going to stop listen and write about us? And tell it word for word of what happened to my son and yours? Will that help us? Would telling it the word for word be a good thing and will it finally help with our mental anguish? I know I went public with what was happening with my son in the last 12 years, but when you tell your story to the bbc itv or the other tv channels or newspapers it’s only a sliver of the story it’s not the whole story it’s not how our children suffered and continue to suffer with the huge trauma. It’s not how we parents can’t get past the hate. The heartbreak and the heartache that we live every f**++ day, those people who abused my child living their f**++ lives free of guilt , yet I live every day with this guilt some days are so f**++ hard to get out of bed because the guilt you are going through is so f***g overwhelming and all you want and beg is please end it now. I can’t bear anymore. When I sit near my son and he is hyperventilating and crying because he is having a flashback a memory and saying no man no man. And at that I want to go find those F*** who hurt my baby Huge apologies for my language. . @mencap_charity @CBFdn @RightfulLives @right2homeUK @StrippedOf @nikkijfox @JayneMcCubbinTV @islingtongztte @Autism @Saba_Salman

Care minister: there are too many “rogue providers” in the care sector for people with learning disabilities, after our investigation into Blue Ribbon Healthcare @Alison_McGovern said we need to change the kind of providers caring for the most vulnerable itv.com/news/2026-09-29/too-…

Wow! In the last hour over 900 people have signed the petition to protect the legal rights of disabled children and young people. We have just two weeks to get it over 100,000. Will you help? petition.parliament.uk/petit…

NEW: We’ve uncovered more allegations of abuse and assault at homes run by Blue Ribbon Healthcare, a private care firm responsible for the care of people with learning disabilities. BRH is already under investigation by CQC after our investigation in July itv.com/news/2026-09-28/stea…

This is alarming: when Burnham was asked on LBC if his proposals included disabled children, he replied: “No. This is adult and particularly older people’s social care.” So he is not really fixing social care for everyone... (h/t @DCPcampaign)

We warmly welcome the publication of the MHC of Ireland's recent Code on surveillance in mental health settings. As far as we understand, this precludes any use of Oxevision within bedrooms. We urge NHSE to follow suit. stopoxevision.com/2026/09/23…
