I guess of all the things I’ve asked AI since I stopped posting here, this is probably the least professionally problematic one accidentally to have ended up on X. Hope you’re all well. I’m off to be quiet again. Don’t imagine much has happened anyway. 😬

As the Royal Warrants have now been signed, I can confirm that this is why my TwiX journey is over, doubtless to sighs of relief from many. Very much a part time appointment (2-3 wks/yr), and my practice at the bars of Scot, E&W continues. Peace out, you lovely people.
Axiom is pleased to share the news that Roddy Dunlop KC, Dean of Faculty, has been appointed as a judge to the Courts of Appeal in Jersey and Guernsey.

Breaking my twitter embargo to promote this, to students and practitioners alike. It was born of a conversation on X, and I am delighted to see it come to fruition. Sincere thanks to @rblackqc and Dominic Scullion, advocate, as well as the other contributors, for making it so.
A second edition just published by Edinburgh University Press, only 43 years after the first edition, published by the Law Society of Scotland.

A belated happy 2025, everyone…! You may have noticed that I’ve been rather quiet on here. This is because I’ve been nominated for appointment to a (very much part time) judicial position. It will only involve sitting 1-2 weeks a year, and I will remain in practice at the Bars of Scotland (mainly) and England and Wales. However, I don’t think it’s wise for judicial office holders - even part time ones - to be posting on social media, and so I’ll be holding my tongue from now on (doubtless to the relief of many). I will leave this account active, and can still be contacted on DM, but other than in exceptional circumstances won’t be posting. I’ve met some great people on here. Some awful ones too, mind. 😳 I’ll miss the banter, but not the doomscrolling. Take care, all of you. And be nice to each other!

Going to do the only sensible thing and spend the festive season off social media. See you in 2025, and in the meantime: merry Christmas, ya filthy animals. (It’s from Home Alone, before anyone complains). 😘

I know nothing of the rights and wrongs of the Letby case, and would not think fit to offer comment. But counsel should not, in my respectful view, be holding press conferences on our own cases. That’s not what we do. It is not consistent with the duties of independence, or our recurring plea (maybe it’s just me making it, but I think not) that we shouldn’t be identified with our clients. Leave press conferences to others, and focus on preparing and presenting the case.

📊 Legal aid in Scotland is in crisis. The number of cases funded through legal aid has dropped by 29% since 2016 despite growing demand. Urgent reform is needed to ensure that everyone has access to the support they need. Join us in raising awareness about this issue: bit.ly/4g511S9.

The future of legal aid is at a critical crossroads as a third of practitioners will reach retirement age in the next 10 years. We need the next generation of legal aid solicitors to join the conversation so those who need it most will have equal access to justice. bit.ly/4g511S9

Are people now deliberately stupid on here, to farm engagement? Given how many likes this post got, if that is the tactic then it seems to work.

How many times have we warned that attacking (in the verbal sense) lawyers *for just doing their job* creates the risk of actual attacks (in the physical sense)? This is what happens when our politicians and our media fail to understand the rule of law. bbc.com/news/articles/cy8977…

Qv also the Disturbed’s Sound of Silence. And Johnny Cash’s version of Hurt.
Is there such a thing as a cover song that’s better than the original? Why yes. Yes there is. Siouxsie and the Banshees cover of The Beatles “Dear Prudence” is FAR superior.

Thanks to @Telegraph, new bio description just dropped. I enjoyed a chat with @DonaldCMacleod after. Although I’m very disappointed he didn’t tell me about the Anthrax gig, and even more so that he didn’t get me a ticket. 🤬
