Eosinophilic esophagitis is an allergic esophageal disease in which loss of the epithelial protein SPINK7 drives pathogenesis.

Here, Nurit P. Azouz @NuritAzouz, Marc E. Rothenberg @RothenbergLab & team @CincyChildrens report that the transcription factor OVOL1 promotes SPINK7 expression, while IL-13 suppresses OVOL1 nuclear localization and stability via calpain-14 to exacerbate esophageal inflammation.
This video shows OVOL1 (purple) was primarily localized to cytoplasmic organelles that border the membranal protein desmoglein 1 (DSG1) (green).
