NJ’s 2 biggest cities are ≈6mi apart, and connected by several bridges, all of which are highways, none of which are safely passable by foot, bike, or other mobility devices. @GovMurphy @Teepeea2Diane

The Brooklyn Bridge carries half as many people as it did in 1902, because personal automobiles are the worst way to move people

Street parking in JC is >99% subsidized: - avg market rate: $3,000 / year - residential permit: $20 / year 60,000 on-street spaces = $200MM/yr subsidy of car ownership. This is terrible policy / socializes costs of car ownership (Source: JC Parking Plan jerseycitynj.gov/residentres…)

Beyond embarrassing that the NJ Senate signed on to this bill, while NJ is experiencing a surge in traffic violence github.com/bikejc/njsp @mayorstack @SandraBCunningh you should be ashamed of this vote.

Citi Bike usage in JC+Hoboken has avg'd 23% annual growth for 6yrs ctbk.dev/#/?r=jh (Hoboken launched May 2021, shows demand for expansion of network) In JC alone, April 2021 to 2022 increased 62% Easy to miss cyclists bc they're smaller, quieter, & not stuck in traffic

Why parking is even worse than you thought. Cities around the world are abolishing parking requirements🚗🅿️. Toronto 🇨🇦 is just the latest. But why?!👇 Parking requirements - a thread🧵

Surprising insight that ebikes can actually be a lot safer. Haven't experienced this yet for myself but the math certainly checks out.

"It's also surprising how a little boost makes a big difference in your control and safety. Increasing your top speed from 15mph to 20mph means a car going 25mph passes you half as quickly and has twice as much time to "see you coming" as it comes up behind you."

Really nice review + thorough comparison of 4 styles of ebikes by @RunsAsCoded: ebikes.neighbor-ryan.org/ It's rare to see in-depth experience with several styles all next to each other and also centered in a Jersey City / NYC context.

"Bioswales vs street parking", Hamilton Park edition: • Example block: 120k sqft, home to 200ppl • Ringed by 42 parking spots • Convert 18 spots to bioswale ⟹ absorb 1.5" of rainfall over entire block 1.5" less flooding (+greenery) OR free car storage for <10% of residents?

Woeful #bikenyc trip on 59th Street from 6th Ave to QBB tonight. Started taping at Plaza Hotel. I passed 200 cars, buses, trucks that were hardly moving. The city is absolutely broken. This transportation system DOES! NOT! WORK! Blocked crosswalks. Danger. Chaos. Gridlock.

Thread is really blowing up. So many people responding with their communities where exactly the same thing happened.
And the endless wrath of the "We Ruined Our Own Cities" file continues with Kansas City

We’re advancing a package of 8 (!) bills in Albany this spring with @TransAlt that have the potential to usher in a new era of safety and justice for New Yorkers. These are exciting measures that have the potential to really move the needle and save lives. But we need your help!
