Modern programs are memory bound and pointer chasing is outrageously slow.

O(N^2) algorithms absolutely can, and many times will be faster than a “faster” O(logN) algorithm for small input sizes.
What is some piece of Computer Science or programming knowledge that *you* think is "core" but not enough people seem to know?

To follow this up BrandShield has tried to blame the victim here. xitter.cf/BrandShieldltd/status/…
BrandShield remains committed to supporting our clients by identifying potential digital threats and infringements. We encourage platforms to implement stronger self-regulation systems that prevent such issues from escalating. (4/4)

I kid you not, @itchio has been taken down by @OriginalFunko because they use some trash "AI Powered" Brand Protection Software called @BrandShieldltd that created some bogus Phishing report to our registrar, @iwantmyname, who ignored our response and just disabled the domain

I keep seeing social media posts calling Balatro a roguelike and I don't see it. What makes Balatro a roguelike? Where's the procedural world generation and grid-based gameplay? Does the game have some kind of HP or mana system that I didn't reach when I played it?

The two most educational things in any new environment: - run the project in a profiler - run the project in a debugger it sounds silly but just singlestepping through the whole thing anwers so many questions

It only happens when I'm typing or someone else is typing...?
At some point in the last little while, Discord has decided to use most of a CPU core and 50% of both my integrated and dedicated GPUs while it has the focus. What is happening here? Last time this happened it was an ad, but I can't see any ads now...

Its unfortunate that pure ECS has taken much space in e.g. game programming classes & discourses. Most projects don't need it. A more loose, flexible and balanced approach would be more constructive to learn & build with than a very defined concept which people try to stick to.

Avoid putting resource cleanup code in Update() methods (in whatever engine you're using) unless you can guarantee that the Update calls won't be throttled. It may seem like cleaner logic sometimes, but if that update can be throttled or suppressed, so can your cleanup code...

The junior dev asked the senior dev “why are you pushing this code with no abstraction? What if you want to change it in the future?” The senior dev responded “then I will change it in the future” In that moment the junior dev was enlightened

Reminder adding 100ms accounts for a 3.8 billion dollar loss. I understand not everyone is working in this kind of domain but we’ve all worked in a project where having a poor >p75 _did_ hurt a lot of companies revenue.

so when i see web app programmers lecturing game developers on how AI is going to do all our work for us i laugh my fucking ass off because all they're doing is showing everyone that they never mentally made the transition out of intermediate the code is the easy part
