Something that’s stuck with me for years, & that I was reminded of while watching the #ElizabethHolmes documentary: Of all the things Holmes is accused of and of all the ways Theranos potentially endangered patients, the crime that sent her to prison was NOT about patient harm.

As a physician, there’s something profoundly unsettling about the fact that she was ultimately held criminally accountable for the financial losses of already extraordinarily wealthy investors, but NOT for the potential harm to vulnerable patients.

She was prosecuted for both, but only convicted of defrauding investors. In the end, our justice system punished the loss of wealth, but not the betrayal of patients’ trust.

Science gives us hope. Today, in Bunia #DRC, the first participants were vaccinated in a new #Ebola vaccine trial called TUMAINI, which means “hope” in Swahili. There is currently no approved vaccine against the Bundibugyo virus causing the outbreak. This trial will help us understand whether any of the vaccine candidates designed for Bundibugyo virus work. In the meantime, the existing Everbo vaccine (licensed for use in preventing other Ebola virus disease) will be tested. @WHO is supporting this DRC-led effort to find answers and save lives.

Genomic sequencing shows that the Ebola virus from Nigeria’s recently reported only imported case is highly similar to that from Kenya’s @MOH_Kenya reported first imported case, differing by only one mutation. My thanks to the sequencing teams at @NCDCgov and the Institute of Genomics and Global Health @RedeemersUni , Ede, and to @christian_happi for this excellent work. We are forging ahead with public health control measures while awaiting results of further investigations and testing. Our approach is that of solidarity and global cooperation, appreciating the role our sister African nations, @AfricaCDC, Technical partners and experts @WHO, @DrTedros, @Dr_JeanKaseya, Prof. Aliko Ahmed @alikothe3rd, @Fmohnigeria as well key International partners especially The Bureau of Global Health Security and Diplomacy (GHSD) @StateDept. We are determined to do our best to protect the lives and livelihoods of our people and we urge all Nigerians and our partners to work together with us. By the grace of we shall succeed and rise above this public health emergency as we did in 2014.

▶️ 𝗗𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲́𝗲𝘀. 𝗗𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗰̧𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮̀ 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿.

I feel horrible for the real Dr. Salman, who has this scam artist impersonating her. Impersonating a real physician with impressive credentials to take advantage of vulnerable patients to sell snake oil AND tell patients to stop their chemotherapy/radiation is diabolical.

There is an especially outlandish conspiracy theory that oncologists are hiding the cure for cancer Its proponents must think us particularly noble, then, when we sacrifice our lives to keep the secret: forgoing a panacea and succumbing to the very disease we treat Dr. Shroff is not the only “wounded healer” I’ve known, but her legacy is far more than the wretched illness that claimed her own life too soon She did her very best to push oncology forward, especially for patients with notoriously difficult-to-treat biliary tract cancers (a close relative, anatomically and sometimes pathophysiologically, to pancreatic adenocarcinoma) I remember her incredible humility to stand at the podium at one of our largest scientific conferences and admit that a triplet therapy had not produced the benefits she had hoped for, allowing biological plausibility to cede to data yielded from the clinical trial she conceived & ran Our field is full of such examples of good ideas failing to reach fruition, but we can only get better by admitting what’s not working as well as promoting true advances When the history books are written, most, if not all chemo will look like grand folly, akin to our modern view of, say, blood-letting But it is because of visionary physician-scientists like Rachna that we are making any progress at all: doing the best we can today while realizing there must be a better way and testing rigorously our ideas of how we might get there May she be remembered in part for her tireless work, born out of irrepressible hope and true caring for her own patients as well as ones she never met (she never failed to kindly & helpfully answer a question I posed to her when I faced a management conundrum in her niche of cholangiocarcinoma) RIP to a dear colleague (link in post below to a fund for young investigators named & bestowed in her honor)

In 1992 Peter Ratcliffe received this rejection from Nature. Almost 30 years later he won the Nobel Prize for the same discovery. Don't lose faith in the things you believe in.

When their daughter, Francesca, passed away from ATRT, an infant brain tumor, Andrew Kaczynski and Rachel Ensign made a commitment in her memory to change the future of childhood cancer research. Inspired by their nickname for Francesca, the Team Beans Infant Brain Tumor Fund was created to advance infant brain tumor research at @DanaFarber, where Francesca was treated. With this critical funding from the Team Beans Infant Brain Tumor Fund, researchers have already made important strides in studying how ATRT cells resist current treatments. This has allowed researchers at Dana-Farber to search for new targets that could make existing therapies more effective, bringing new clinical trials and new treatments possible for the children and families who need them most.

This was a very emotional #HealthcareUnfiltered to tape; @allisonoconn shares her journey as a caregiver oncologist to her wonderful mother. We all read the @ASCOPost story; hearing it was very different. TY, Allison for sharing; I know it wasn't easy. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas…
