Three things in it matter.
Provenance chains are continuous and temporally ordered, verified cryptographically at each step.
Secure event timelines do not require a centralized repository.
Selective disclosure is central. Organizations share what is needed and protect the rest.
Set that against the calendar. On January 1, 2027, DFARS 252.225-7052 expands from material melted or produced in a covered country to material mined, refined, separated, melted, or produced there. Magnets, tantalum, tungsten. The obligation reaches back to the mine.
The bottleneck was never storage. A supplier four tiers down will not open its customers, volumes and margins to a prime in order to prove where the ore started. Selective disclosure is what makes that supplier willing to participate.
