In the late 1990s, malaria accounted for more than half of paediatric admissions at Kilifi’s main hospital in Kenya. And today? Severe childhood malaria has become so rare there that researchers say it is now difficult to run clinical trials for new treatments. That incredible transformation came from decades of consistent access to insecticide-treated nets, test and treat policies, community health workers and sustained surveillance, and the district played a role in piloting the new malaria vaccines. These floods were exactly why @caabu organised for 75 politicians to write to Ed Milliband about Gaza. Only pressure will push Israel to allow proper aid access into Gaza. caabu.org/news/news/75-uk-pa…
A Palestinian man breaks down in tears outside his tent, flooded by rain, helpless to do anything. Around 70,000 displacement tents across the Gaza Strip were flooded as the first winter storm hit, destroying bedding and personal belongings and leaving thousands of families facing a harsh winter without safe shelter or heating. Civil Defence crews responded to more than 1,500 distress calls from affected families. Displacement tents in several areas, including Gaza Port, Deir al-Balah, al-Mawasi in Khan Younis and Jabalia, were also damaged.

Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. The prominent Hong Kong activist pleaded guilty to conspiring to collude with foreign forces under the Beijing-imposed National Security Law (NSL). He was one of 45 opposition figures jailed for participating in unofficial “primaries” in 2020 - the largest mass prosecution under the NSL to date. UN experts have said the charges relate to activities protected under international human rights law. Hong Kong’s human rights situation has deteriorated dramatically since 2020, with more than 300 people arrested for violating the NSL or a colonial-era “sedition” law. In addition, the so-called Article 23 legislation introduced by the local authorities in 2024 has further deepened repression and silenced opposition voices in the city. No one should be jailed for peacefully exercising their rights. Authorities must release everyone detained solely for their political participation.

It is shameful that the world failed to prevent genocide, failed to shelter Gaza's civilians from Israel's bombs, and is now failing even to lift the blockade on basic supplies that would protect children and their families as rain floods the camps of displaced people across Gaza.

Hunters are being paid thousands of dollars by the state of Idaho for each newborn wolf pup that they kill. Ecologically vital, noble wolves, which number fewer than 1% of their historic population. It's unhinged. theguardian.com/us-news/2026…

‘Your solidarity is our only lifeline.’
How do you measure pain when you have fled death 16 times? 💔 My daughter Lana speaks for seven children who lost their youth, their home, and their safety. We live trapped inside a fragile nylon tent where daytime heat turns into a suffocating, rat-infested nightmare by night. 🐀🦟 My husband’s shrapnel injuries leave him helpless to fetch water, and my children are covered in a spreading skin rash with zero access to soothing creams or ointments. My infant baby girl knows nothing of this world, completely unaware of the missing asthma medication and basic diapers she desperately needs. 🆘 We lack clean water to drink and basic food to shield their small bodies after a full year in worn-out rags. Every single day, I fight a silent war to keep my nine-member family alive. Your solidarity is our only lifeline. Please share, quote, or donate—help us survive before it is too late. 🙏🇵🇸 chuffed.org/project/205073 @shaunkin @ssuzie__ @7_1_2PM @umaymohamed @MBourboun @MarkSwanny @joe90kane

A tribute from one of Joshua Wong’s closest colleagues and friend @nathanlawkc as he’s sentenced to an extra ten years behind bars for his role in the ‘umbrella democracy movement’ in Hong Kong. ‘…his name has already been written into history as one of the bravest activists to stand up against one of the world's most powerful autocracies’
Beyond the U.S. election results, there's something else you should care about: My friend Joshua Wong has been sentenced to another 10 years in prison for his peaceful advocacy of democracy in Hong Kong. He's been behind bars for over 2,100 days. When the police knocked on his door, Biden had just been elected, the iPhone 12 was brand new, and OpenAI had only recently launched the GPT-3 API for developers. He has not walked free since November 2020. — In 2016, I was elected as the youngest member of the legislature in Hong Kong. Joshua led the election campaign and worked 18 hours a day. I promised Joshua that we'd form a caucus together in the next term, in 2020, when he'd be old enough to run. It turned out to be the last time Hong Kong held a Legislative Council election in which a genuine political opposition could compete (though only around half the seats were electable). Beijing later imposed an election reform to make Hong Kong's election more like Iran's. Since 2020, the Chinese regime has dismantled Hong Kong's civil society and cracked down on political dissent. Nearly two thousand people have been imprisoned on political grounds. Many others have left the city to seek refuge elsewhere. I fled and was granted asylum in the UK. Joshua is expected to leave prison at 40, after 16 years in jail. Some say he’s naive or reckless; I fiercely disagree. He's one of the most strategic, persistent and risk-taking people I know. He might well have become an amazing entrepreneur if he'd been born elsewhere. He’s brave enough to do something most wouldn’t: risking his freedom to stand up for what’s true and right. I am so humbled by his dedication, and proud to call him my dear friend. When I left Hong Kong, I had no idea that we wouldn't be able to speak for nearly six years. Now, plus ten. When you're young, and work is so intense and busy, you never think to take time to chat. When you're young, and work is so intense and busy, you don't always think to make time just to get together. When people asked me what I regretted most, I often said I hadn't spent enough time simply hanging out with the brilliant people around me. I still feel that loss deeply. I wish I could see him as soon as possible. Joshua should be released immediately. — If you don’t know who Joshua is, I suggest you turn on Netflix and search for his name. No matter how long the authoritarian Chinese regime keeps him imprisoned, his name has already been written into history as one of the bravest activists to stand up against one of the world's most powerful autocracies. Even behind bars, he continues to demonstrate extraordinary courage.

Statement on the sentencing of Joshua Wong from the foreign ministries of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
What a travesty of Justice: You sentence Joshua Wong to 10 more years in prison when he's 2 months away from being released. "There is no greater tyranny than that which is perpetrated under the shield of the law and in the name of justice." - Montesquieu theguardian.com/world/2026/n…

#JoshuaWong is one of the great democracy heroes of the 21st century. HERO! An activist from aged 14, he's spent the last six years in a Chinese prison & has now been sentenced to another 10 years jail. SHAME!

By the time Joshua reaches the age of 40, he would have spent almost half his life in jail. This tells what the regime fears most: hope, courage, and new ideas. But keeping him behind bars would not put out the fire of dissent Joshua has already sparked. It’s in our DNA by now.
One of Hong Kong's best-known democracy activists, Joshua Wong, was sentenced to 10 more years in jail on Thursday for collusion with foreign powers. Wong has already spent almost six years behind bars and was previously expected to be freed in January u.afp.com/SyR5
