Samsung’s new passport-style Galaxy Z Fold8 is selling faster than planned. The bottleneck is not the hinge. It is the display driver chip. Z Fold8 DDI is designed by Samsung System LSI and built at UMC on 22 nm. That line is already running at its limit. Samsung asked for a “super hot run” to pull wafers forward. UMC said no, because speeding those lots would mean reshuffling other 22 nm work. DDI is a custom part. DRAM can be shifted between models. These chips cannot. Samsung is now taking next year’s development wafers and putting them into this year’s Fold8 build. A normal-run DDI lot still takes about four months before the die can meet Samsung Display’s OLED and then go into final assembly. Hinge and ultra-thin glass orders are also being raised. Flip8 demand is described as in line with a weaker plan. Apple is expected to launch its own passport-style foldable later this year. The AI foundry squeeze is showing up in a phone part most people never name. Mature 22 nm capacity is tight enough that a hit foldable cannot simply buy more silicon this quarter.
