this is why VOTING MATTERS.
no matter where you are, if you can, YOU VOTE!

I’m an atheist who was raised Muslim under literal Sharia law for 24 years. And I relate more to Abdul El-Sayed’s pro-secular, pro-women, pro-LGBTQ, pro-science, and pro-free speech values than any of the Christian nationalist lunatics running America today.
Replying to @Ayaan
I’ve been told I’m not supposed to like Abdul El-Sayed, apparently because he’s a Muslim, and I have to say I’m stunned by supposed “rationalists” who would prefer Christian nationalist fanatics — who continue to roll back women’s rights, ban books, bring religion into classrooms, and continue to trample all over civil rights and free expression — over pro-secular candidates who support abortion rights, LGBTQ rights, and separation of religion and state despite being religious.
If you’re a thinking, rational pro-reason person — not a blindly angry anti-Muslim person — who has seen El-Sayed’s 60 Minutes interview over the weekend — you simply damage your credibility by insisting that he’s a “jihadist.” I knew he was smart, but every answer he gave to Ross Douthat (his Republican interviewer) was brilliant and thought-provoking. Before y’all spit fire in the comments (always love that!), here’s some of what he did:
- Defended capitalism with quotes from Adam Smith - differentiated corporatism from capitalism, explaining compellingly why today’s America is run on the former and is eroding its free market capitalist values.
- Distinguished between “cultural liberalism” — the cultural choices people make — and “constitutional rights” — the freedom and ABILITY of every person to make those choices; said he only talks about the latter, not the former. Said we should respect the rights of people to make their cultural choices, even if we don’t agree with the choices themselves.
- Explained that just as he doesn’t appreciate being held accountable for the actions of Egypt or Saudi Arabia just because he shares their ethnicity, it’s antisemitic to assume that all American Jews are accountable for — or ideologically associated with — the actions of Israel just because of a shared identity. This is something I relate with immensely, as do many Jewish people, diasporic and Israeli.
- Gave the best and most relatable explanation for how conservatives who insist people should build more families and have children are disincentivizing people from doing exactly that because of their bonehead economic policies. I’ll let you watch that full exchange yourself.
Feels normal now, but I’m old enough to remember how unlikely it once was that a black man named Barack Hussein Obama would become president of the United States. But after watching this interview, I’m seriously wondering whether y’all could potentially have a President El-Sayed — sounds insane, but when it comes to Enlightenment values, let me tell you as someone who literally grew up under Sharia law for almost all of 24 years: today’s conservatives are closer to it than either Mamdani (who was conceived before his parents got married - haram!) or El-Sayed (who avidly supports abortion rights, secularism, and LGBTQ folks - haram!).

Tonight, the American people sent a clear message — they want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they face.
These results were only possible because outstanding candidates stepped forward in every region of the country — including in areas once considered long shots. They came from different backgrounds and represented a range of political perspectives, but were united by shared values, a belief in public service, and a commitment to putting the people of their districts and states first.
We also owe a debt of gratitude to the thousands of election officials and volunteers from both parties who helped ensure a smooth election and carried out one of the most essential functions of our democracy.
While this administration has another two years in office, our job now is to roll up our sleeves, make changes wherever we have the power to do so, prevent further damage, and lay the groundwork for the future.

Last night Trump said he could have won Vietnam in a week. His plan was “going after Ho Chi Minh City.”
Ho Chi Minh City was Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam. Our ally. The enemy’s capital was Hanoi. We bombed it.
He called the presidents who fought that war stupid, then explained how he’d have won it by attacking our own side.
58,220 Americans died in that war. Trump got five deferments. Now he’s telling the rest of us how easy it would have been.
He’s had more than fifty years to learn which side we were on. He still hasn’t. That alone should disqualify him from sending anybody else’s kids to war.
Instead, he’s weighing more strikes on Iran after Tuesday. His administration has reportedly considered using the “mother of all bombs,” the one he calls “like a tiny nuclear bomb.”
The man who thinks we should have bombed our ally’s capital gets to choose the targets.

Reform is clearly a party of racists & sexual abusers. The fact that anyone supports these thickos & sickos is as worrying as it is mind boggling. What does it say about the moral fibre of so many people in the UK that Reform even exists? It's an embarrassing stain on the nation.

If Reform weren’t racist, corrupt, misogynistic and dangerous, from the top down, undercover reporters wouldn’t have a story. A basic fact that cuts through any bullshit attempt to defend their conduct.

At this stage, I'm not sure it matters if they admit it or not. As far as I'm concerned, a person is definitely racist if they vote Reform. Surely everyone knows it's a racist, fascist party. I can't believe someone falls into it accidently. The c*nts know what they're voting for

Historian of fascism here. This is an escalation of an attempt to normalize extreme violence, ritualize violence, militarize the country, and make violence entertaining so when they ask you to commit violence in their name, you will be ready.
Trump & Hegseth aren't just proposing to livestream an execution for people who want to watch.
They're proposing to broadcast a man being shot to death, even if deserved by our system, and even if you agree with this version of the death penalty, knowing that the footage will be clipped, shared, and pushed into social media feeds.
Including those of our children. The gruesome image will be everywhere.
Parents will have virtually no control over whether their kids see it. Once those images are released, there is no taking them back.
Hope all the parents in the Trump Admin are cool with that.

30,285 votes • Final resultsLet me ask a direct question - why do some people see these two men as bastians of society, leaders of a vital movement to make the UK a better, safer, more prosperous place?
Danny Tommo tried to kidnap someone at knifepoint because he believed they had £10,000 worth of the cocaine he was dealing. There are also strong allegations, and court records, that he was also involved in a domestic abuse case against his former partner, along with recordings of him saying he mistreated her so badly she became a crack addict. He is currently facing multiple charges dating back from April, along with his current charges. He is a career criminal.
Tommy Robinson is a known drug addict, who boasted about being able to score drugs everywhere he went. He has been convicted on multiple occasions of violent crime, along with fraud, and several other offences.
This isn't some conspiracy or rumour. These are facts about these men. Violent serial criminals.
So, to anyone who supports these men, including elected MPs: explain how they are making Britain safer for women and children. What exactly about attempted kidnapping, drug dealing, violent crime, fraud and drug addiction represents the values you want for this country?
Do you condone that conduct, or do your standards not apply when the criminal shares your politics?
Tell me what makes these men role models. Would you want your own children to grow up like them?

Nothing could be more disrespectful to a service member’s sacrifice than pretending it never happened.
Pete Hegseth is a disgrace and must be fired.
Exclusive: More American service members have died in the Middle East during the ongoing Iran war than the Pentagon has disclosed publicly, according to six U.S. officials familiar with the data.
