Fit In Without Tearing Down Your Own When you want to fit into society, the easiest shortcut is to prove you are not like "those other ones." You distance yourself, you call them out, you make jokes at their expense, you show everyone else you get it. It works in the moment. People nod. You get accepted. But it costs you more than you think. First, it is cheap belonging. If your place in a group depends on degrading people who look like you and came from where you came from, you don't actually belong. You are just being used as the acceptable one to say what others want said about them. Second, it breaks trust. White/Green/Pink/Orange people, like any group, have a wide range of beliefs, lifestyles, politics, regions, classes, and religions. Not following the dominant social script in your city, your college, or your workplace does not make someone backwards or bad. Often it just means they have different values, priorities, or experiences. If you degrade them to look good, other people learn they cannot trust you either. If you want to fit in, do it by what you build, not who you tear down. Bring something useful to the table. Be competent, be kind, be funny, be reliable. Have your own opinions and own them without needing to use other people as a punchline or a cautionary tale. You can disagree with other people without degrading them. You can choose a different path without declaring their path shameful. Real social status comes from standing for something, not from performing disdain for your own.
