AI predicted risks for 130 health conditions from one night of clinical sleep recordings.
Can a single face photo help predict cancer survival? New study @LancetDigitalH suggest that facial features encode both physiological ageing and imminent mortality risk, showing that consumer-grade photographs carry multiple physiological #health signals. An #AI foundation model was trained on more than 40 million face images, including photos of people with cancer. Among about 38,000 #cancer patients, those whose faces looked at least five years older than their actual age had a 21% higher risk of death, after adjusting for age, sex and cancer type. Of patients whose estimated biological #age was more than 20 years above their real age, 21% died within 90 days. The model focused mainly on the area below the eyes and around the nose. thelancet.com/journals/landi…

Can the molecular 🧬 clock ⏰ of a human cell be turned back by 60 years? A new study in @AgingCell suggests it can, at least in the lab. Researchers at @UniBonn converted immature 🩸 red blood cells from an 80-year-old donor directly into neural stem cells, without first passing through the pluripotent stage. Epigenetic clocks showed the cells' molecular #age fell to under 20. The reset happened gradually over about 50 days and was tracked for more than 100 days. That slow pace is the real value here. It gives researchers a model to test which factors and compounds speed up or slow down cellular rejuvenation in the brain, relevant to #ageing-related diseases such as Alzheimers. This is not a therapy, and reversing age in a dish is very different from reversing it in people. But age remains the biggest risk factor for dementia, so understanding how cells become younger matters. doi.org/10.1111/acel.70751

Cocoa flavanols protect endothelial function during prolonged sitting in healthy older adults ▶️ Cocoa flavonols prevent the impairment of endothelial function induced by sitting for 2 hours. ▶️ Flavanol-rich foods may be efficacious nutritional strategies to counteract sitting-induced endothelial impairments during prolonged sitting in older adults, pubs.rsc.org/fo/article/17/3… @guani_vic @DrRPalmquist @LoriShemek @_atanas_ @_INPST @nuclearball @chidambara09 Two hours of sitting impaired upper & lower limb endothelial function (flow-mediated dilation; FMD) & increased blood pressure in healthy older adults. Consuming flavanols prior to sitting preserved endothelial function in both conduit arteries.

How the insula and anterior cingulate interact to produce "sickness behavior". The anterior insular cortex (AIC) and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) function as a coupled input-output hub—often central to the salience network—that translates peripheral immune signals into the subjective feelings and behavioral adaptations of sickness behavior. [1] (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…), [2] (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…), [3] (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…) 1. Interoceptive Sensing and Input (Anterior Insula) • Immune-to-Brain Communication: Peripheral inflammatory mediators (such as cytokines like IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-6 released during infection or endotoxin challenges like LPS) signal the brain via vagal afferents and circumventricular organs, projecting to the brainstem (nucleus of the solitary tract and parabrachial nucleus) and up to the thalamus. [1] (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…), [2] (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…), [3] (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…) • Primary Interoceptive Mapping: The posterior and mid-insula initially map these raw physiological and visceral changes (e.g., muscle aches, thermal shifts, gastrointestinal distress). [1] (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…), [2] (sciencedirect.com/topics/imm…), [3] (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…) • Re-representation and Sensation: The anterior insula re-represents these signals to create conscious feeling states, generating the subjective experience of malaise, fatigue, nausea, and body pain. Research using models like endotoxin administration shows marked increases in functional connectivity between the left anterior insula and the mid/anterior cingulate cortex that directly correlate with self-reported global sickness and back pain. [1] (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2673…), [2] (sciencedirect.com/science/ar…), [3] (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…) 2. Coordination and Behavioral Output (Anterior Cingulate Cortex) • Action and Motivational Orchestration: Once the anterior insula registers the internal distress signal, it communicates directly with the anterior cingulate cortex (including the pregenual and midcingulate subregions). [1] (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…), [2] (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…), [3] (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…) • Autonomic and Motor Adjustments: The ACC projects heavily to subcortical and autonomic nuclei (such as the hypothalamus, periaqueductal gray, and amygdala) to orchestrate the physiological response—driving fever, neuroendocrine changes (HPA-axis activation), and sympathetic/parasympathetic shifts. [1] (link.springer.com/article/10…), [2] (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…) • Behavioral Conservation: The ACC-insula circuit shifts motivational priorities away from energy-consuming external goals (socializing, foraging, physical work) toward conservation, rest, and social withdrawal, which help the body reallocate metabolic resources to fight the pathogen. [1] (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…), [2] (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…) For a broader breakdown of how deep brain regions map these internal states, see recent research highlights like Stanford Maps Insula's Sensory and Emotional Regions. A new study in Neurology Open Access suggests that years spent with clinical #obesity in early adulthood may leave a mark on the #brain by midlife. Researchers followed 190 participants from 1985, with MRI scans at an average age of 56.5. Instead of BMI alone, they used the new Lancet Commission definition, which separates obesity with organ and #metabolic dysfunction from preclinical obesity. 70% had been clinically obese at some point, rising from under a third in their twenties to over two-thirds by their mid-forties. Those with clinical obesity had more than twice the median volume of 🧠 white matter hyperintensities, a marker of small vessel damage linked to cognitive decline. The proposed mechanisms include hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, chronic #inflammation and insulin resistance. doi.org/10.1212/WN9.00000000…

Ketosis/ Keto Diet / Sleep/ Acetoacetate/ BHB / NREM The most direct preclinical evidence indicates that AcAc, but not BHB, increases slow-wave activity (delta power 0.5–4 Hz) during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and suppresses glutamate release in mice, supporting a potential role for ketone metabolism in sleep homeostasis. Dietary, fasting, and aging models further suggest that lipid/ketone metabolism can alter NREM/rapid eye movement (REM) balance, circadian metabolic rhythms, and sleep–wake responses to energetic stress, with aged-rat data showing sex-specific REM and cognitive effects of ketogenic interventions.
