Consultants don’t want to strike, but after 18 months without formal negotiations, they cannot wait any longer. These strikes are planned to take place on 25 and 26 November, with Christmas Day levels of cover provided. There is still time for the Government to make progress.

Doctors’ London Weighting hasn’t increased in more than 20 years, while rent, travel, childcare and other costs have all soared. London's doctors work with an outdated allowance. @BMALondon

This is the last week of talks with government and employers. While they’ve been open and frank there remains a significant chance we won’t reach a “landing zone”. We hope to avoid industrial action but we must be prepared.

"A desperate culture of cover-up and denial that prizes saving face over saving lives." @thomasdolphin on how the Thirlwall Inquiry report highlights the need to protect whistleblowers and shows that NHS managers should be regulated, in the same way other safety-critical groups are. theguardian.com/commentisfre…

Accountability must apply to everyone working in the NHS. That's why we're calling for regulation of non-medical managers. Read our full response to the Thirlwall Inquiry bma.org.uk/bma-media-centre/…

Expensive exam fees have always been an unfair financial burden for resident doctors trying to progress in their careers. But this is set to change. As agreed in the deal made with the government earlier this year, resident doctors will soon be able to apply to have Medical Royal College and Faculty exams reimbursed. A complete list of Medical Royal College and Faculty exams that will be covered is now available on our website and the Academy's website. bma.org.uk/our-campaigns/res… The system is expected to go live in the next few weeks, along with guidance on how to claim. Stay tuned for further updates 👀

We’re getting rid of uncertainty & instability for locally employed doctors. It brings stability for visa holders and doctors stuck in the bottleneck. It brings an end to reapplying for your own job every 6 - 12 months. We are holding the govt’s feet to the fire on this deal.
‘Start winding down that gig economy’ @BMAResidents chair @fletchjack welcomes the arrival of new guidance outlining employers' requirement to transfer locally employed doctors to substantive, nationally recognised contracts. Read in full👇 bma.org.uk/news-and-opinion/…

I think we may have mentioned this!
Doctors have suffered the biggest salary reductions of any profession in the last 20 years, when inflation is considered. This new research will come as no surprise to our members, but will the Government finally take notice? metro.co.uk/2026/09/09/brita…

The weaponisation of disciplinary procedures at East Lancashire Hospital Trust must stop. Managers at the Trust are conducting sham investigations, then deflecting and concealing when challenged. Toxic cultures are not just bad for doctors, they are bad for patient care. Read more 👉 bma.doctor/4xqR6PN

From today, locally employed doctors in England can apply for specialist, associate specialist and specialty doctor contracts. Calls for a pathway for LEDs wanting to transition to national terms and conditions has been a long-standing demand of the BMA. The EPF (eligibility permanency framework) is part of the 2024 SAS pay deal for England reached between the BMA and the Government. Find out more bma.org.uk/news-and-opinion/…

Doctors in Cheshire and Merseyside are saying enough is enough. Faced with recruitment freezes, cuts to overtime pay and dangerous staffing levels, doctors have entered a formal dispute with the Secretary of State over cost-saving measures they warn are a "catastrophe waiting to happen". Patients deserve better. Doctors deserve better.

More than 200 resident doctors will begin new pilot placements in England today, marking the first step towards much-needed reform of an absurd rotational training system. It's hoped these pilots will reduce the unnecessary waste and disruption caused by the current system. This reform was part of the deal that ended resident doctor industrial action in 2024. thedoctor.bma.org.uk/article…
