It seems Behringer has a better idea. Same open source principles but a much more sophisticated design which far exceeds the capabilities of our simple MIDI box. Onboard audio processing, analogue inputs and outputs, touchscreen interface equates to a true all-in-one. Different use case though. If this proceeds beyond prototype to a product it will replace my main controller because I can connect my turntables to it. I still need something small I can sit on my desk for day-to-day use. At the price point Behringer are floating of $US300, this device is the market disruptor I would have liked to be. I feel a bit validated though, that a major company perceives the same market gap I do. djtechtools.com/2026/10/27/b…
So @nz_webguy and I have decided to build a DJ controller. This is the initial concept. There are other designs about, this one is mine and it is better. The device has an ESP32 brain and will speak standard MIDI over USB. The electronics will consist of off-the-shelf components directly wired in proof-of-concept then attached to a PCB in the production iteration. The case and some of the interface will be 3D printed. The objective is an ultra-portable controller comprising everything a typical DJ actually needs outside of a club environment, inexpensive enough that non-DJs might consider it for use as a glorified remote control for management of their music library. The target platform is Mixxx, exclusively.

Exactly so. People get distracted by Rudi Dutschke's "long march through the institutions." Dutschke is just the soundbite. The actual philosophy is all Antonio Gramsci. Once you're familiar with the literature you see Gramsci's cultural hegemony in operation all the time. An example is leftist politicians dismissing opponents with minimisations. "A small but vocal minority" says Chris Hipkins regularly, describing his opponents. The anti-mandate demonstrators on parliament's lawn is a case in point. The reality is the demonstrators reflected a majority opinion but they are portrayed as outliers. A minority, malcontents, misinformed. Their rejection of the consensus is a sickness. Ostracise and reject them. Don't listen to what they say. Trust the establishment, we are your single source of truth. Stay safe within the consensus. We will protect you from harm by restricting the spread of their disease. Capturing the institutions is a component, the praxis of Gramsci's cultural hegemony is this reinforcement.

Here's another example. The reporter from an institutionally captured newsroom asks the question: "Ron Mark says DEI caused the Manawanui sinking. Can you rule out someone with views like that from becoming Defence Minister?" DEI did cause the Manawanui sinking, or at least it was a contributing factor. Everyone knows it yet Ron Mark's perfectly valid reflection of material reality is dismissed as peculiar to reinforce the cultural hegemony. teapawt.org/TheRedbaiter/status/21…
"Can you rule out someone like that becoming Defence Minister". Legacy media, chock full of DEI hires itself, is unhappy with NZ First candidate Ron Mark's criticism of DEI in the Defence Forces. Ron Marks is right, but he gets no back up from National leader Chris Luxon, who accuses him of "cosplaying Pete Hegseth". Of course one of the best things NZ could do for defence is sack all of the current hierarchy and replace them with Mr Hegseth. (US Secretary of War). As he's not available, it sounds like Ron Marks would be a suitable replacement. The damn fools in charge of the $200 million dollar Manawanui and who were sailing it that afternoon were unqualified and unbelievably, had no idea how to release an engaged auto-pilot. The National party (and especially Luxon's) own woke commitment to DEI is why they continue to support this insanity. IMHO there should have been a lot more Defence force staff charged over this incident. The DEI that caused it was driven right from the top.

A new client told me the other day that their enterprise architecture maturity was low, and gave me access to their repository to assess it. What I found there was comprehensive, most of the artefacts I would expect to see in an organisation which has embedded an architecture practice over many years. I reviewed a few. Principles, patterns, capability models, catalogues and so on, to get a feeling for their organisation and their thinking. It all seemed well reasoned though it got lighter as I drilled into some of the downstream artefacts and there were notable absences, like solution designs and requirement specifications, migration and implementation plans. Evidence of the practice in practise. Which was the point I realised what I was looking at, confirmed by the same creation date on many of the documents: the organisation had done the high-level thinking -good on them- then used AI to extrapolate that downstream and fill in the gaps. Fantastic. They'd accelerated their architecture journey with AI. The artefacts that had been autogenerated need to be sanity-checked and improved but they're 70% of the way and the organisation had saved themselves a lot of time and effort getting there. In the moment I considered how much my role has changed. Architects use common frameworks. Like a project manager might use PMP and an engineer uses ITIL, architects typically employ TOGAF and COBIT to guide our work and coordinate with one another. The former is for architecture and the latter is for governance. Five years ago the typical split between thse realms might be 90%/10%. Blokes like me spent a lot more time creating artefacts than we did on gatekeeping. The robot generates the artefacts now. The value of an architect to an organisation today has transitioned it seems to me, to governance and COBIT. Align to business objectives, set the criteria, the boundaries, the thresholds: escalations, risk: evaluate, audit, assess. Quantify. Qualify. Compliance. Apply human judgement in other words, over increasingly autonomous systems. (Beneath it all though, integrate. The data domain remains the challenge it always has been, legacy systems chugging away, a mix of bespoke integrations and middleware bridging. Data governance, access control and hygiene are key constraints, in feeding the AI beast.) Developing an AI strategy is a component of the work the client is engaging me to perform. Once upon a time it would have been "here's this shiny new tech, it has these capabilities, this is how it aligns with your objectives, here is what the future will look like if you adopt it, here's the difference between then and now, here's how you get to there from here. These are the alternatives. Here are the risks and the costs" which really amounts to a glorified solution view. Now the AI future is too uncertain to predict in my opinion so I reckon the focus should be realising short term value and preparing for uncertainty: augment existing processes. Hybridise for flexibility in adoption of future capability. Establish solid governance and oversight. Set metrics and define criteria. Focus on the data and the access to it. Once upon a time this was all relatively straightforward. Architects applied logic and reason, critical thinking to empirical evidence, to model what is, design what will be, plan the transition and measure the results. Today, while most are focussed on the societal ramifications of AI and "what can it do for me" architects are asking "how can we implement it for our clients.* The best answer I can give is "fix your data, establish controls, augment what you're doing already, measure the results and prepare to rapidly evolve" because the honest answer is really "I don't know." I have lost confidence in my ability to extrapolate. AI is so far outside my paradigm much of what I have always done no longer seems applicable. Less will be applicable tomorrow.

It'ss astounding that Cindyboy gives the diametrically wrong answer. The right answer is to leverage the situation to justify change. "Yes, DEI is a problem. We're prioritising merit-based appointments across the entire public service to minimise the risk of another Manawanui."

I thought this was quite cool. Paul Smith designed this Picasso exhibition, an aspect of which was the decor. On the left are drawings set against posters advertising his exhibitions over the decades. On the right is a portrait of Paul Picasso in 1924. Smith chose a wallpaper to match his harlequin costume. I'm one of those people who doesn't get Picasso. I've visited galleries and museums dedicated to the bloke in several cities and a print of one of his paintings I bought in Barcelona hangs in my lounge. Still, I look at most of his stuff and think "so what?" and "maybe I'm just too stupid to appreciate what everyone assures me is a masterpiece."

This is pretty funny. Right now in NZ the vestigial media and their far-left political party allies are squealing about enrolment closing, fabricating electoral legitimacy complaints. Meanwhile this bloke just voted from the middle of a DESERT on ANOTHER CONTINENT.
NZ white liberals- 'Maori are too special needs & can't enrol in time for any election.' 🥹 Meanwhile, me, a Maori boy, living in a donga in the desert 2 days drive from Perth- 'Nah bro, all set, gonna send off my vote this week' 👍 Sick of people pretending we are basket cases

The political class and the corrupt media must be absolutely bricking it that this resource exists.
Before you vote for your local MP, find out who they actually are. Every MP has a Good Oil AI dossier. Interests, votes, who funds them, and the KeyWiki associations, sourced and attributed. Ten minutes of homework beats three years of regret. app.goodoil.ai/?utm_source=x…

🇮🇳 India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with an AI avatar of spiritual leader Swami Chinmayananda, who died in 1993. The AI simulation expressed support for Modi's government: "Narendra, the work you have taken up in your hands is India's work, India is with you."
